Small plane crashes near Skopje, Macedonia leaving several dead

A private plane crashed in heavy rain near Skopje after leaving from the Italian town of Treviso, Macedonian officials have said. Four Italian citizens and two Kosovars died when the small aircraft went down.

The pilot requested a refueling stop in Skopje, but reported no emergency ahead of the Tuesday crash, authorities reported.

The plane disappeared from the radar only 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from the airport. It fell near the village of Kojle outside the Macedonian capital.

All six people on board the Piper Seneca were killed. The casualties included four Italians and two Kosovars. The private twin-engine plane was registered in Germany.
"They departed from the airport Treviso in Italy with the destination of Pristina," the head of the national public security bureau, Mitko Chavkov, told reporters.

The former Yugoslavian republic of Macedonia has launched an investigation in the incident.

Skopje Airport estimates handling 1.7 million passengers by year's end. "In the future we expect to continue growing. We see strong competition from Sofia, Thessaloniki, Podgorica, Tirana and Niš, but European integration gives us all the opportunity to continue growing", Zoran Krstevski, the General Manager of TAV Macedonia, said.

I flew to Malta from Sofia this August and between 30-40% of the plane was full with people from Macedonia. It was the same thing during the flight back from Malta to Sofia.
