Wow, definitely surprising. I didn't expect this to be so popular!

CN Tower EdgeWalk overwhelmed by high demand

Published On Wed Jun 01 2011
Dan Robson
Staff Reporter

Quote:
Terrifying heights aside, the most challenging part of the CN Tower’s new EdgeWalk appears to be just getting a ticket.

Walking around a ledge at 356 metres above sanity is, apparently, highly appealing.

Tickets sales for the CN Tower’s new attraction kicked off on Wednesday to the continuous drone of a busy tone.
Quote:
Kennedy called two dozen times, only to receive a busy signal again and again. The EdgeWalk website is not set up to process online orders.

....“It’s brutal,” Kennedy said. “I was willing to wait on hold for 30, 60 minutes. This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing
Quote:
Jack Robinson, the CN Tower’s chief operating officer, said the first day of sales had been terrific. He didn’t specify numbers.

“We are thrilled with the response” he said. “Due to the huge response, customers may experience some delays in getting through, but we ask them to keep trying. It’s worth the wait.”
Quote:
“This is such a cool thing, but they’re just not ready to take the demand I guess,” she said. “If you have an international attraction, you’ve got to have international customer service.”

EdgeWalk opens Aug. 1.

Did you read the story in The Star of the ironworker who was part of the crew that helped build the CN Tower? He was the one who was famously photographed without a harness, perched over a steel beam with nothing below....

So when someone buys a ticket for this, is it at a specific time? What if your time comes up and there is a thunderstorm? A raincheck for another day?

Perhaps they charge more if it is a day of high winds or thunderstorms!

right, because they can then add value with the "Superman" experience....as in, the wind will blow you out and you will be able to pretend to fly like Superman.

I have written up a bunch of context about EdgeWalk here: http://www.vanishingpoint.ca/edge-walking

Not so much a comment about how it relates to other cities' attractions, I focus instead on how it fits into our city and our relationships with the skyline.

That's some very thoughtful writing ...

Not only is it only 3 feet wide, but there's tons of things to trip over. Um, no!

I'm very glad that the CN Tower's going to get a real world attraction. This one is certainly not "boring"..
My concern is that they could possibly ruin the looks of the tower by putting a lot of the metal sticks on it.

They can make it look like some sort of crown, on the other hand they could make it just as deadly as some horrible graphity on the landmark tower.
Anyway, I think they should seriously take the beauty aspect into consideration.

I love the guy in front who's holding the 'rope' with his hand the whole time.

Yeah, they haven't. This week I finally had the chance to see what they've done and it looks terrible at distance.

Could be worse.. they could have butchered the pod with a spiralling rollercoaster as was done elsewhere. I can't imagine a simple walkway is going to disrupt the visuals from the ground level that much, though...

The problem isn't with the walkway, but what I take to be the tethering ring above it, and specifically the supports for it. From close in, it's fine, you can see the tethering ring which fits in alright with all the other rings of the pod, so the struts underneath it aren't completely incongruous.

Once you get a kilometer away though, that tether ring is no longer discernible, but its thick, vertical support struts are still very visible. The effect resembles a stubbley eyelash atop the pod---just about the ugliest thing they could have possibly done with the tower.

It honestly looks terrible at that distance. Conceivably, there's a point another 1-2 km out where you can no longer discern the struts, but they've created a 2-3+ km viewing donut where the tower has become the ugliest, most visually embarrassing thing in this city. Given that this is precisely the viewing distance that the tower was originally designed to look best at, I wouldn't blame anyone who decided to point the pitchforks at Canada Lands Corporation. They obviously gave zero thought to the attraction's visual effect.

If I were presented with the choice (and only this choice), I would choose the rollercoaster.

From what I saw of that awful rollercoaster, I'd want no part of it on any public building.

I do not know who would want to ride a roller coaster with small drops. The drop tower, and the spinning ride that dangles you over the lip of the tower looks cool, though.

When I see the CN Tower from afar these days, the first thing that comes to mind is this:
