Uijeongbu light metro operator files for bankruptcy
12 Jan 2017

SOUTH KOREA: Uijeongbu LRT Co filed for bankruptcy at the Seoul Central District Court on January 11. The operator of the light metro line in the city of 500 000 inhabitants 20 km north of Seoul had debts of more than 240bn won at the end of 2016.

When the 11·1 km elevated U Line opened on July 1 2012, it was expected to carry nearly 80 000 passengers a day in its first year, but in practice it managed only 10 000. Ridership rose to 35 000 by the end of 2016. A daily average of 118 000 passengers is reportedly needed to break even, with 45bn won a year required to cover operating expenses. Uijeongbu LRT Co has been earning about one-third of that

Fully underground light metro. Just shorter trains/platforms, but otherwise full subway lines. Light subway might be a better term? A lot of countries wouldn't make the distinction

light rail transit map

seoul has plan to take subway anywhere in the city by 10 minute walk distance.
seoul has 327.1km subway long. but it is very short compare with other city.
for example seoul is 0.31km/per 10 thousand, london 0.57km, paris 0.43km’
moreover seoul subway using rate in traffic is 36% which half rate of tokyo(86%)

These are all light rail transit. Of course these LRT station can transfer not only with other seoul subway line but also with other BUS.(almost free transfer: $ 0.2 USD fee)
Seoul ongoing other big subway project and high speed bullet transit in city. But above are all light rail transit.
As you know these LRT is middle size transit between tram and subway.
Most them built underground except "weraesun which mixed WITH TRAM.

FRANKLY IDK other countries
but korea used to distinguish LRT with subway. when we call 지하철 subway it is big one/long size train. LRT is very something new in skorea.
as u know it economic feasibility

P.S
Today News about Shinansansun New Seoul subway project about $3 billions huge project
POSCO-LOTTE consortium and Twebi consortium
both of them pass examination of Ministry land&transfer of korea.
First one if pure famous construction comany and the other one has experience in proffessional city plan.
So government will be selected one of them by competition. And to built New Subway of seoul.(my home town will be open 3 station)

I saw POSCO's soil testing in my home town(geumcheongu)!! They get approved testing and digging soil with machine(Shinansansun)
I heard that they same testing other area(gwangmyoung/ansan). Many citizens inform that internet cafe.

A lot of other countries have "subway" systems that they consider full subway, but are closer to the definition you're using for LRT. The systems in Lyon or Glasgow for example. To most, subways are underground and high capacity, LRT are a form of trams, usually medium capacity and street/surface running.

Even in Korean, 지하 means underground. It's confusing in English then to call it LRT, when most people outside will just see a light capacity underground line. 한국어로 "LRT" 말하면 괜찮지만 위국에서 좀 혼전합니다. 위국인들이 "tram" 같은 걸 생각합니다다

I see.
So you mean that foreigner will be confuse "LRT" with Tram or something non subway traffic when korean called 경전철 as LRT.
that is really interesting. As you know korean are familiar with Big subway. So in their own perspective small capacity subway look like not a subway but included in different category such like a LRT.
That is good point.

You'd think that someone like the UIC would try to come up with a more strict set of definitions for urban rail system types, based on capacity, over/underground lengths, etc. Maybe there's just so much variety that there'd be a whole bunch of systems which fell between any particular set of definitive terms?

On another note, thank you for posting a graph of Seoul's modal transit share! I've been looking for one of those for years! I'm surprised to see Seoul's metro share so low. The dominance of the city's taxi services is especially disconcerting, but the success of Seoul's buses is well-known. I know that the city has a lot of LNG and LPG buses, but I'd be interested to see how many of those are hybrid electric vehicles and how many are pure petroleum.

We all know that the city is working hard to expand its rail share of transit; all it needs to do to make it more appealing (and private motorized vehicle service less so) is emphasize walking and biking in future developments. No more 8-lane wide roads, new rules on street-level developments for commieblocks, harsher (and more consistent!) punishment for driving safety violations, I think the city already implements congestion charges in some districts? A lot will need to change to make Seoul into a train city, but the biggest single step of building more rail is well underway.

SKorea government think it is impossible to solve mass traffic problem by widen car road and highway.

So SKorea government has to plan to make "Circle Seoul Metropolitan Subway&train system"

And GTX C extension until SUWON city.

With "Circle" system commuter who stay in satellite city access into Seoul's major business district within 30 minute.
And GTX project are satisfied with economical feasibility
And reduce seoul train system's degree of congestion

estimate project cost 19조8000억 $ 18 billions

Seoul's new GTX to have an average speed of 113 km/h. That's 3~4 faster than current subway trains. Traveling time between Ilsan, one of the satellite cities of Seoul, and central Seoul will be cut from about 1 hour to only 13 minutes.

Also from the article:

1. GTX A (Dongtan-Ilsan) is expected to be finished in 2023, GTX B (from Songdo in Incheon to Namyangju, assuming the full eastward extension) in 2024, and GTX C (Geumjeong to Uijeongbu) in 2025.
2. The trains are designed for a max of 198km/h, making them almost high-speed, and will have 8 cars per trainset
3. The time from the Suseo HSR station to Seoul Station will be about 8 minutes on GTX A. That seems amazingly quick, considering it currently takes about an hour on current subway lines. Work on the section of the project between Suseo Station and Samseong station began this month.

This project is really going to be transformative for the city.

"Seoul station and around area will be dramatically develop as New center of seoul city" CEO of KORAIL SAY

-Now seoul station and around area surround very low quality building n infrastructure.
Seoul station will be make New GTX A, GTX B, Shinansansun in underground.
This is not deserved global city's station.(Like TOKYO STATION)
So benchmark TOKYO station's complex develop case.
we have land in there. So we will changed this area for new hub with seoul government/korea government.

-Make hi pass system apply to KTX Rail system with car road.
We will make MOU with KOREA ROAD&HIGHWAY infrastructure and apply one pass system from car to transfer KTX rail.
So people parking their car in station and transfer with KTX rail in every main station.

-also Gangmyoung station make inner city transfer station&boarding system to Incheon Int airport. make 2300 car parking lot in Gangmyoung station.
