Opening of the Ui Lrt

The Ui Lrt (known as the Ui-Sinseol Light rail in Korean) opened this morning.

After 8 years of construction (and some suspension of construction), the line finally opened to the public this morning. It features 13 stations over 11 kilometers.

There are transfer stations at Sinseol (Line 1 and Line 2), Bomun (Line 6) and Songsin Women's University (Line 4)

UI right rail is very important for Bukhansan (북한산).
Seoul has amazing clime mountain i.e Bukhansan (북한산) but that place hardly access due to distance and shortage public transportation infra.

But with UI transit open..people very easily can hiking and clime rock mountain.
UI's station located very infront mountain.

I hope they're going to double-track those GTX lines through the station, otherwise this could potentially be a bottleneck for those two lines, which is totally unnecessary if they're building this place from scratch.

Koreans tend to overbuild, can't see it being an issue, although I think the GTX-A shares tracks with the KTX in the tunnel heading south from Gangnam-gu.

GTX-C line extension by government

Actually C line 45.8㎞ but Ministry of land modified original plan to 의정부~양주 덕정역 12㎞ 구간과 금정~수원역 14㎞
So total 26km more extension plus 45.8㎞
Especially 금정~수원 RAIL is going to share with 1 line's railroad.
then GTX can speed 150㎞ in this share line area.
If this extension confirm then total guest rise up from 26~ to 300,000 per a day.

Great, I think I've said on one of these threads (probably while discussing with aquaticko), that I believe GTX Line C was too short and should be expended North to Yangju New Town (the largest New Town North of Seoul), and South to Suwon (the largest city in the province). I think with these extended lines, the balance between the lines is much better.

Is the Shilim line a single-track twin-bore tunnel? It seems strange that this will be the second LRT in Seoul which is not only totally grade-separated, but underground. This begs the question of why not just build the new lines to metro standards; you know that the area around any new stations will be totally rebuilt with escalating real estate values, anyway.

I'd go with "because politics". Politicians make the promise to build subway to their constituency, and the voters mostly check if there's gonna be a station next to their home and if they will be able to transfer quickly. They don't pay much attention, at least in the planning phase, to average train speed, train frequency or capacity.

Which leads politicians to reduce the level of service to light rail lines which cost less to build or to order an inappropriately low number of traincars or trainsets.

Once the line opens and commuters bitch about how inconvenient the new line is, politicians are forced to try to correct the mistake by improving stations, signals, and ordering new trains. But this takes forever...

One good example is Line 9, which goes through the busy areas of Gimpo, Yeouido, Express Bus Terminal, Gangnam-gu, Songpa-gu, yet has 4 cars per train and fairly low frequency. The line opened 8 years ago, but the new trains are only coming online these days, and the problem will only be solved by early 2019 (with 6 cars per train and slightly improved frequency).

Another fun one is going to be Incheon Line 2. While the line is located more in the heart of Incheon than Incheon Line 1, they decided to build a tiny 2-car trainset light rail. The line opened in 2016, and now, only 1 year after opening, it's saturated. They've just announced a plan to move to 4 cars and improved frequency, but most on the new cars will only enter service in 2025. In the meantime, traffic will grow immensely, especially with new urban projects along the line (Seochang New Town, Luwon City, Cheongna, Geomdan). To be honest, I'm not even sure that in 2025, 4 cars will be sufficient, and I'm not sure the system can structuarally be increased to 6 or 8 cars.

At least the Sillim Line is less strategic, so it might not be used all that much. But it's still open to discussion.

That seems so short-sighted on the part of constituents. Especially considering how station-centered development is in a lot of places, you'd think people would look into what is being promised in terms of service, not just that there is something being promised.

As a fan of Alexis de Toqueville and of Public Choice Theory, I certainly agree about the inadequacies of modern representative democracy.
That being said, people have a lot to worry about beyond politics, and when they do care about politics, there are many other issues beyond infrastructure to take into consideration, so I can understand where it all comes from.

Other culprits are realtors. Real estate is a huge business in Korea, and realtors don't hesitate to exaggerate development plans, or be less than forthcoming about transportation and transportation projects. Less than cautious clients sometimes fall for the unrealistic expectations set by the realtors as well.

That being said, this is far from being only a Korean problem. Many countries go through similar issues that hinder development. Getting any kind of construction permit in France, tough eminent domain laws in Japan, political standoff in Hong Kong, disaster of new Berlin airport, lingering new runway/airport projects in Greater London, state of railroads in the US, Summer of Hell in New York, white elephants in China,...

Big projects with that many stakeholders are often messy, and overall, Korea could be much worse off.

But still, it's still far from perfect, and people with informed decisions should try to influence people in power towards taking the right decisions.
