Norway - One photo per day

Ålesund (Møre og Romsdal)
Ålesund is a mid-sized city in the north-western part of Norway with a population of aprox. 40 000. It is also an important jugend city, due to its beatiful jugend architecture. A large part of the city center was rebuild in jugend style after the great city fire in 1904 which left only one single wodden house in the city core. Over 10 000 people stood without a home and some 80% of the buildings burned to the ground.

The German Kaiser Wilhelm II had been a frequent visitor to the area and expressed a personal concern for the plight of the population. As a result, much of the international help was from Germany, sent in Keiser Wilhelm’s name.

Borgund stave church, Borgund (Sogn og Fjordane)

Borgund stave church (Borgund stavkyrkje) is a stave church located in Borgund, Norway. It is classified as a triple nave stave church of the so-called Sogn-type. This is also the best preserved of Norway's 28 extant stave churches. It was probably built in the end of the 12th century, and has not changed structure or had a major reconstruction since that date.

The church site shows evidence of a previous building, which can point to an earlier church or perhaps an old pagan temple that had been taken into use as a church. The interior of the church, except for the pulpit and the altarpiece, is mainly free from the post-Reformation decorations seen in most other stave churches. An authentic medieval square-shaped baptismal font made of soapstone is still a part of the interior.

Several runic inscriptions are found on the walls of the church, one reads: Tor wrote these runes in the evening at the St. Olav’s Mass. And another one reads "Ave Maria" and you will find these at the west portal of the church.

Nidarosdomen, Trondheim (Sør-Trøndelag)
This gothic cathedral is as most european catherdrals buildt over several years, but the work startet in 1070. Over the years, several fires and rebuilds has occured, and maintenance of Nidarosdomen (Nidaros Cathedral in english) the is an ongoing process. The church has been the main church of Norway since the middle ages and still is today.

Rauma elv (Møre og Romsdal)
Rauma Elv, or the Rauma River was once a famous salmon river. But the 68km long river has been infected by the salmon-ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaris which has been a major problem in several Norwegian rivers the last years. This river was also preserved in 1992 against planned dams and power-plants.

Sjøsanden, Mandal (Vest-Agder)
800 meter long beach with very fine sand. One of many beaches in the area, but this is the most popular.
