Lubiąż, Lower Silesia - one of the biggest abbeys in the world waiting for restoration and utilization

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbatia_Lubensis_abbey

Cubature 330m thousand cubic meters, the western facade is 223 m long. It's really huge - that's why Lubiąż Fundation (Fundacja Lubiąż) will not be able to restore entire complex.

Empty St Mary's church:

Before the war - beautiful stalls. Now there's nothing except the walls.

Thank you for this great pictures of a jewel of art history. Do you know something about the history of the architecture? I think the church might be 14th or 15th century with baroque additions, the rest probably 1st half of 18th century?
Although it is sad that there won´t be a restoration of the whole complex, I have to say that the damaged parts seem to have a fascinating atmosphere.

First church - about 1200, gothic church - first part of 14th century and a new baroque complex 1681-1715.

I hope there will be some day, but now that's improbable.

what an amazing place....I wonder if it could be part of a major cultural-convention-recreational redevelopment that would help pay for its restoration. absolutely one of Poland's gems.

Is some progress being made with restoration? And a purpose for the building? It seems a bit to big for a school, or a museum (there are loads of those)...

Progress in a glacial pace. Small fundation is trying to restore this huge complex.

Absolutely beautiful restoration. I am sure some of the best craftsmen/women in Poland are working on this. What they have recreated, with all the detail, is very beautiful and should be admired and appreciated on its own. I wish some rich bastard would just donate a huge amount of money to this site. I hope they don't stop.

Remarkable church and abbey. Is the Abbey still in use at all?

It's a former abbey. Now only a few rooms are available for tourists - the rest are empty.
