Lexington, Kentucky 2011: Gratz Park and Northside

On a sunny April afternoon, I conducted a small walking tour of Gratz Park and Northside in Lexington, Kentucky with Chris Cousins of Dayton, Ohio. It has been a while since I last walked these neighborhoods, given that I once lived in the center of downtown - Park Plaza Apartments, for much of my tenure at the University of Kentucky until I graduated in 2008. I moved north by about 70 miles to Cincinnati, Ohio, but always appreciated the southern charm that Horse Capitol of the World gave.

The charm can be characterized by the laid back nature of the city. Traffic is slow moving on these side streets, and quaint one-lane meanders - such as New Street in Gratz Park, can be ripped out of any European city and transplanted here. Distinct brick homes, with their stately front porches, tall but narrow windows and ornate trims, grace these two near-downtown neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, I am not able to locate my photos of these neighborhoods prior to 2008 as they are on backup, but they will hopefully make their return to UrbanUp at some future point.

Gratz Park is a neighborhood and a historic district that is located north of downtown, and was named after early Lexington businessman Benjamin Gratz. The historic district consists of 16 structures, including the Hunt-Morgan House, the Bodley-Bullock House and the Carnegie Library. The neighborhood was built on land that was established in 1781 just outside of the original boundaries of the city.

4 The Hunt-Morgan House, historically known as Hopemont, was built by John Wesley Hunt in 1814. Hunt was known as the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies and earned his fortune from the mercantile business shortly after Lexington was established. Can you believe this was almost demolished in the 1950s?

6 First Presbyterian Church was founded in 1784 and is the oldest congregation on continuous existence in the city. The first pastor of the church, Adam Rankin, built the Rankin residence at 317 South Mill Street in 1784, and it remains the oldest house in the city.

Adjoining Gratz Park is Northside. Northside is loosely defined as a neighborhood north of downtown, east of Newtown Pike and west of Winchester Road, and it contains a wealth of historic structures and local historic districts, and also some of the most distressed properties in the city.
