Antigua Guatemala

Es reconocida por su bien preservada arquitectura renacentista española con fachadas barrocas del Nuevo Mundo, así como un gran número de ruinas de iglesias. Ha sido designada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1979.

Desde su fundación fue nombrada como Santiago de Los Caballeros y el 10 de junio de 1566 el rey Felipe II le extendió el título "La muy Noble y muy Leal ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala"

Fue la tercera sede de la capital del llamado reino de Guatemala que comprendía a los actuales Estados de Guatemala, Belice, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua y Costa Rica, así como Chiapas. Luego de la destrucción por inundación del segundo sitio, ubicado en el Valle de Almolonga, en las faldas del Volcán de Agua (a donde había sido llevada tras abandonar el primer asentamiento en Iximché en 1527) fue construida a partir de 1543 por el ingeniero Juan Bautista Antonelli en el Valle de Panchoy, y establecida como cabecera de la Real Audiencia de Guatemala en 1549. Durante su desarrollo y esplendor fue conocida como una de las tres ciudades más hermosas de las Indias Españolas.

La ciudad, cuyo nombre original era Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, competía con ciudades como México, Puebla de Zaragoza, Lima, Quito y Potosí. Sin embargo, las circunstancias especiales de los terremotos acaecidos el 29 de julio de 1773, en pleno florecimiento del barroco, cortaron su proceso de crecimiento y modificación naturales. El resto de las grandes ciudades coloniales padecieron de la furia destructiva del neoclasicismo en el siglo pasado y presente, mas no fue el caso de la Antigua Guatemala que ha permanecido detenida en el tiempo y recordando la grandeza de la capital de la capitanía general del reino de Guatemala.
