Prague to Vienna by Train
Hello all,
I'll be traveling from Prague to Vienna on Sunday, May 29th on the train and I have a couple questions: 1. Is it necessary to have reservations for the train, or will I be able to show up at the train station and buy the tickets right before I embark? 2. I'm 22 years old, so I was wondering how much a train ticket will cost for me? 3. Can I pay in either Euros or CZK at the train station? 4. Right now I'm looking at direct European City trains from Prague to Vienna, one option leaving at 10:39 and arriving in Vienna at 15:22, the other option leaving at 13:39 and arriving in Vienna at 18:22. Are either of these trains on a Sunday typically full? Thanks for your help!

What has happened to the Vienna Pendolinos? I don't see them listed in IDOS or on ČD website. "A.Dvorak" is listed as an EC now - longer journey time.
Sorry skysdalimit, I cannot answer your questions, obviously I'm not up to date! The Pendolinos took 4 hours, required booking. I notice the fastest buses are also 4 hours, probably better to take the bus.

2. If you would buy an e-ticket now via www.cd.cz/eshop, it would cost around 20 euros (for the 13:39 train, the first one is not available anymore). At the station, it will probably cost about twice as much. 3. Yes. 4. I have travelled with very full EuroCity trains, for example Berlin-Prague or Bratislava-Košice, but I don't have any idea about this particular route. |

The buses are another option, but they can be delayed because of the traffic on D1. And my experience with the very cheap Eurolines bus from Vienna to Prague was rather bad. |

Thanks Tramfreak. Personally I prefer the train over bus any day but some prefer the bus if it is quicker.
Strange that there is no reference to temporary suspension of the Vienna service on ČD's SC Pendolino website (but a couple of Vienna pages still accidentally online but unlinked!). Almost like communist rewriting of history as if it never existed. I hope they get it running again. Are there enough Pendolino trainsets to run to Vienna or are they redeployed to Bratislava and Ostrava?

Thanks for the help guys! I was able to buy 2 tickets on the 13:39 EC train from Praha hl.n. arriving to Wien Meidling at 18:22. For my friend I had to buy a Sporoticket from Praha to Brno and then an EC ticket from Brno on to Vienna. Apparently you're allowed to start out on the Sporoticket on the EC train to Brno and then continue on with the next ticket from Brno to Vienna, and it actually turns out to be less expensive than buying one ticket from Prague to Vienna!
