It's true Rinchie, when I first stepped into Xintiandi I thought to myself 'this isn't China'!

Thanks for the thread. Xintiandi featured in 2006 Dicovery Channel's documentary about China (Discovery Atlas: China). It was interestingly put as seen from a perspective of a migrant worker who complained that a bottle of beer costs 40 Yuan (does it?) there while he can buy one in a corner shop for just 2. If so then it may indeed be a little too over-commercialized and made more of an attraction park than an ordinary city district. It's still looking very nice nonetheless and I will certainly pay a visit there once I'll be in Shanghai some day. I might try to get my beer in a corner shop though.

40 Yuan for a beer doesn't sound too surprising to be honest - a cocktail costs around 100 Yuan. Such is the nature of Xintiandi and Shanghai that alcohol prices are comparable to the more expensive bars in London. Clubbing is still exclusively the activity for foreigners and the super-rich in Shanghai, who can afford this kind of prices.
