Tamilnadu Agriculture & Animal Husbandry| தமிழக விவசாயம் & கால்நடை வளர்ப்பு

Dear all,

This thread is dedicated for the developments, updates, business, marketing and projects related to Agriculture, Animal husbandry and Fisheries.

Though some may question what is the relation between skyscraper and agriculture, this thread is opened because of supports in TN arratai arangam thread.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Intro from wiki

Agriculture is the most predominant sector of the economy of Tamil Nadu, a state in India. 70% of the states population is engaged in agriculture and allied activities for their livelihood.[1] Tamil Nadu has as an area of 1.3 Lakh km2 with a gross cropped area of around 58.43 lakh hectares of which the Gross Irrigated Area is 33.09 lakh hectares which is 57% and the balance 43% of the area are under rainfed cultivation.[2] Tamil Nadu is the home land of Dr M.S. Swaminathan, known as the "Father of the Green Revolution" in India. The state is historically known for its agriculture from ancient times. Annual food grains production in the year 2007-08 was 100.35 lakh mt.[3] But now this is steadily declining due to industrialisation and real estate business. The younger generation rapidly moves out of villages due to education and white collar jobs and that is also worstly hit this sector.

Hi Arul,

This is a great thread to start. Since I have not been following news on the sector, is it true that TN's agriculture sector has been declining as a percent of GDP? What would be the reasons for it?

Agriculture-The Back Bone Of Indian Economy

The back bone of the Indian economy

Agriculture is a field of study which deals with growing food crops, preparing the soil for cultivation, making the land productive and raising livestock. There have been experiments for using science and mechanization for commercial crops all over the world. The field of agriculture has the majority of world population engaged in this occupation. Manufacturing companies in food related products need the expertise of agriculture specialists for developing and introducing new products in the market.

Career Opportunities in Agriculture

Agriculture offers a variety of opportunities for people opting for this profession. Agricultural Universities all over India offer courses in Agriculture form Bachelor’s degree to PhD level. The candidates with these qualifications can find employment in Government departments like rural development, food and agriculture, environment and bio-medical research etc. Banks and financial organizations employ Agricultural graduates for lending to agriculture based ventures.

Animal geneticists help in improving the quantity of milk production, meat and wool. The study of plant and animal genetics also involves breeding techniques for improved varieties of cattle, grains, vegetables, fruits and other crops. Molecular biologists experiment with genes to develop new and superior varieties. Foresters do research in the laboratories and also go into the field to create awareness about forests and train them in techniques of farming and educating them about the vital importance of forests for the human life and environment. Food scientists work in food processing companies helping in preserving, supply and assuring its flavor, color and texture and nutritional value etc. Their knowledge in micro-biology, biochemistry and engineering helps in developing innovative methods of converting vegetables, fruits and livestock into other forms of food products. All schemes formulated for agriculture sector will be implemented: Minister

Quote:
Within a year all schemes and subsidies formulated for agriculture sector will be implemented to make Tamil Nadu a model State in agriculture, Minister for Agriculture K.A. Sengottaiyan said here on Thursday.

Addressing the 41st Foundation Day of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, he said scientists had to contribute their bit to make this dream of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa a reality.

“Increasing agricultural production and feeding the population of the country are two areas that need focus. There is a general complaint that farm technologies are not reaching the farmer. But, Tamil Nadu is an example where scientists are working hand in hand with farmers to see that technologies are reaching the farmer to the extent possible.”

Recalling the contribution of the university in the development of agriculture, Mr. Sengottaiyan said those who had passed out from the portals of the university were serving the country and the world in various capacities. Their continued services were very vital to the country, which had 56 per cent of the population involved in agriculture and 1.30 lakh hectares under cultivation.

Later, answering questions of presspersons on the ban on endosulfan, the Minister said the government was familiarising itself with the issues and in due course the Chief Minister would announce relevant policy decisions.

He replied in similar vein to a question on the Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement's plea to the Chief Minister for lifting the ban on toddy tapping.

MAJOR ROLE

Minister of Special Programme Implementation S.P. Velumani said TNAU had played a major role in transforming production-oriented agriculture into market-oriented agriculture.

“Even though the economy is doing well and various businesses are prospering, it is a fact that farmers are not in an economically enviable position. Many schemes and subsidies were not reaching the farmers so far. Without improving the quality of the life of the farmer, we cannot look forward to increasing production and productivity.”

To mark the Foundation Day, 72 staff members who had completed 25 years of service were honoured. In addition, 41 awards were given away for the best researcher, teacher, extension worker, team researcher, college, research station, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

As many as 70 faculties, who had obtained research grants of Rs.5 lakh and above, were also honoured. Vice-Chancellor P. Murugesa Boopathi, Registrar P. Subbian, and Director of Research M. Paramathma spoke.

Govt. Plans to increase growth in Primary sector of the Economy from -1.3 % to 4 % by concentrated efforts in Farming, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries.

When common people in Rural areas are ashamed of their roots in getting stuck with centuries old survival techniques and want their Children to move forward in life by aquiring quality skills in the sphere of modern Industrail Economy....

some nutty fellows have advised JJ to distribute "Goat/Sheep" to rural folks, to increase their per capita income,!!!!

Krishna !,please save TN folks.

Dude.. Animal Husbandry is a huge opportunity for rural people to earn good money.. People don't have to depend on rains or monsoons for this.. We just need some vision.. AMUL model in Gujarat is the classic example of what proper planning in animal husbandry can do!!
