Twelve of those injured were in a critical condition, officials said.

The pile-up happened on the on Interstate 10 about 80 miles (128km) east of Houston.

"It is catastrophic," said Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll. "I've got cars on top of cars."

It wasn't immediately clear how the pile-up began, but Mr Carroll said the fog was so thick that officers didn't immediately realise they were dealing with multiple accidents.

I was actually on I-10 heading westbound a few hours after this happened and they were still clearing the debris from the roadway.

Man, I wouldn't have thought that red light jumping was so frequent in America. Some of those are quite insane, I wouldn't have expected them. What state was that, I assume right turn on red is illegal in this place? But crazy to see some people freaking out about other cars actually stopping and following the law only to make some very very dangerous maneuvres...

Its from St. Petersburg, Florida, you can turn right on red unless posted otherwise but you must come to a stop before doing so or you get fined.

Bad drivers are everywhere, but I'm amazed at amount of stupid drivers Florida has.
