What ever happened to the idea of moving SJC to Moffett Field? That would certainly allow San Jose to grow upwards and the current airport site could provide much needed high-density housing and commercial.

That's what I figured. I assume those NIMBY's were aware that their homes were under the flight paths of a military airfield when they bought their homes though. Modern commercial aviation is much quieter than military (non-stealth) aircraft by all means.

Have Santa Clara County ever really tried to push the case for Moffett Field? You'd think it would be an easy sell politically at the county wide as well as regionally.

I've always said that San Jose, in a way, was a super supped up suburban downtown. It always gave me that feeling of a high classed suburb, but super concentrated.

Saying super that many times in a sentence probably makes me sound stupid, lol.

You've been talking to San Franciscans too much.

Downtown is a world-apart from the rest of the city in terms of density. While most of downtown was built before 1930, the remainder of the city only appeared after 1975. The good thing is that many of the empty spaces created in the name of urban renewal are finally being developed. In ten years it'll be a much denser, livelier place.

I agree. DTSJ will be much more dense and vibrant in the coming years.

Arturo,

It's from the Downtown Strategy 2000 document, which can be found on the Downtown SJ Redevelopment Agency website. I scanned the images from the PDF. Obviously, the renderings aren't accurately capturing new/proposed developments but they're still neat. Moreover, I think it gives one an accurate reflection of the kind of infill development and density DTSJ is striving for. If you want, I'll post the rest of the renderings to the SJ Development News 2 forum for you.

The site is currently being demolished. About half of the buildings have been knocked down along with all the trees. The press release in the Merc last year said they wanted to open for New Years Eve 2011, but that seems too soon. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Also, the property at old Oakland Rd and Brokaw is currently being demolished, so it looks like the development is progressing there too. Seems like projects are starting to get funding, which is great for those of us who enjoy the new developements.

I drove by the site earlier today, the pre-existing building(s) is just about completely demolished. I don't think NYE 2011 is completely unrealistic. Based on the renderings, the casino appears to be a basic box, with some minor facade treatment. I don't think the tower is part of the first phase of development.

Looks like the Old Oakland Road/Brokaw site is going to be an Asian strip mall.

Asian strip mall, interesting. McCarthy isn't that far away, I wonder if there is that much demand for another massive Asian shopping center.

I'm kinda disappointed by the design of the casino. I'm a frequent visitor of Vegas and I was hoping for something more unique and instead of a box. I REALLY don't like the tower, but at least it'll be tall! Maybe it'll look better in person.

Dude, this is the South Bay. Much of Southern Fremont, North San Jose, and Milpitas are >50% Asian. Additionally, you have a lot of tech companies in the area (lots of engineers, many of whom are Asian). There are numerous Asian strip malls throughout the area and they are always busy. No shortage of demand here.

I'm not complaining, if it's going to be a strip mall I'd greatly prefer one of these instead of something more generic. I was just wondering if the market in the area is saturated already. There is even another Asian center right across the street from where they are building this one.

There is a pretty large Indian population in the area as well, I wouldn't mind seeing an Indian-focused center at some point, or maybe a hybrid Asian/Indian. I enjoy going through all of the ethnic supermarkets and finding foods I haven't tried before.

To your point, I think there's already a degree of specialization from plaza to plaza based on neighborhood/demographic composition. In Fremont and Cupertino there are lots of Taiwanese owned businesses. In San Jose, there are lots of Cantonese/Vietnamese owned businesses. I found a Fil-Am center in Milpitas recently as well. Certainly, I think the South Bay is overdue for an Asian/Indian oriented shopping center - I think it would be very successful.

From the BizJournal...

Big retail neighbor in store for Eastridge mall

One of the city’s last remaining large-scale development sites for retail projects is being developed.
A largely open land parcel of more than 70 acres at the southwest corner of Capitol Expressway and Quimby Road in East San Jose could be the future site of mixed-use development, including 200 housing units and 360,000 square feet of retail.
Construction of the major retail center just south of the 1.3 million square foot Eastridge mall may signal a more robust commercial development atmosphere has returned to Silicon Valley as the economy has slowly emerged from the doldrums of the past three years. ...
