Pune Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre has been awarded the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) GOLD certification. It is the first Marriott hotel in India, which has received this certification.

According to the company release, LEED certification is an internationally recognised green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

The Pune Marriott Hotel & Convention Centre has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

With its various green initiatives, The Marriott Hotels & Resorts branded property is the first Marriott International hotel in India to receive the honor.

Since its opening in November 2010, the property has worked towards saving and preserving natural resources and the environment. The Pune Marriott has incorporated and adapted: low VOC emitting materials, reduced landscape water usage by using indigenous plants, use of rapidly renewable materials, 42% energy savings for the building operations, hybrid vehicles, alternative refuelling stations for electric cars, vegetated green roofs, omission of ozone depletion refrigeration mechanical systems and many other environmentally-friendly features.

Further, 100% waste from ongoing operations and 95% of all construction waste are segregated for recycling and diverted from landfills. Fifty percent of all building materials were manufactured within a 500 mile radius saving on transportation cost and lowering emissions.

“The Pune Marriott Hotel and Convention Centre is truly honoured to have received LEED Gold. We have always taken extra steps to ensure that we are responsible citizens. We look forward to continuing our efforts and contributing towards a greener world,” said Balan Paravantavida, the hotel’s general manager.

Owned by the Panchsheel Group, the hotel has been built in a manner that ensures 75% of the hotel enjoys natural day lighting, thus saving energy and provides a better working environment. The Pune Marriott has always used 100% chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) free refrigerant materials for air-conditioning, contributing towards a reduction in ozone (O3) depletion. Also, as a policy the property uses only ‘Green Seal’ certified chemicals in all its housekeeping activities. The hospitality brand also encourages its associates to add to its green ideologies by introducing car-pooling programs.

There are future plans to improve the hotel’s energy efficiency, renewable energy, indoor environmental quality and storm water management techniques.

Marriott has opened a 179-key property Courtyard in the city to serve the needs of the business travelers which is developed by Mumbai-based The Advantage Raheja group. This new Courtyard hotel is the third Marriott property in the city and the second of the brand. This is Marriott's 15th property across India.

A third Courtyard at Chakan and a JW Marriott are under construction and will be opened soon. On this occasion, the company has also announced the launch of its economy brand Fairfield Inn in India. Marriott has 18 more under construction across the country.

Speaking on this occasion, Craig Smith, chief operating officer and vice president, Marriott International-Asia Pacific and Australia said, "For Marriott International India and China are the main growth engines. We have developed over 100 properties across Asia-Pacific region. Currently, we are coming up with 57 hotels in China and 35 in India. Courtyard is our fastest growing brand in India and the group currently has 4,000 rooms, with another 8,500 rooms under construction."

He added, "Every market has reacted differently. In India, we are growing by 20 per cent every year. The market conditions in Asia are defiantly most favourable than any part of the world. MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) is the fastest growing segment for us.”

Rajeev Menon, area vice president - India, Malaysia, Maldives and Australia, added, "With the influx of IT, ITES, manufacturing and automobile industries we see tremendous potential in Pune in the coming years. Given the demand this is our third offering from Marriott International in Pune. With this launch Marriott International continues its growth story in the city. India was one of the fastest growing markets and accounted for 10 per cent of Marriott’s annual revenue of $ 2.5 billion from the APAC region."

He added, "We have plans to develop resorts at holiday destinations too, but our pipeline is more of MICE(meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) and mid-segment hotels. Marriott has signed a deal with its Delhi-based joint venture partner Samhi Hotels, to set up 15 Fairfield Inn properties across India in the next few years.

It has plans to develop resorts at the tourist destinations in India. The property also features four banquet halls, a fitness centre, an outdoor swimming pool, party deck, a business centre and an executive lounge.

Sarovar Hotels & Resorts has brought its economy hotel brand, Hometel, to Pune. It recently opened the Noorya Hometel in Chinchwad, Pune, which comprises of 117 guest rooms and suites. Food and beverage options include Flavours – a multi-cuisine all-day dining restaurant and a bar known as Chill. Other facilities include a fitness centre, swimming pool and banquet and conference facilities, which can accommodate up to 85 guests.
