Pennsylvania is a good place for Roadside America because of some of the first major roads going through the state.


This Amish country place is on the Lincoln Highway (US 30), east of Lancaster in Paradise Township.



The Red Caboose Motel is on a side road east of Strasburg.

It's seems like those Cadillac motels are listed in order of best to worst. That last one is pretty dumpy looking.

I had to look up this "South of the Border" place since I'd never heard of it.

Apparently it's on the border of North and South Carolina...so no where even near Mexico. What a bizarre, kitschy, wonderful place.

Anyone ever been to the Mitchell Corn Palace in South Dakota? It's the epitome of a tourist trap, but still worth the visit if you're passing by on I-90.

South of the Border is literally feet from the North Carolina border, to minimize down to the foot the amount of driving you have to do from up north via I-95. Since there's no restrictions on buying fireworks in South Carolina, you can buy truckloads here. I think it started as a fireowrks business and has evolved since then.

Another staple of South of the Border is their billboards. There might be 50 of them on I-95 in North Carolina as you head south.

They must be falling on hard times because the number of billboards goes down every year. I remember back in the day (the 90s) I swear there were billboards for South of the Border north of Richmond. I remember signs like "only 200 more exits to go" and other ridiculous signs. Similarly amusing are the signs after South of the Border on 95 announcing that you'd missed the exit and should turn around.

This is possibly THE staple roadside attraction most well known along the Eastern Seaboard or possibly just the Southeast. The Jersey turnpike rest stops are the only other contender in my noggin.


Also that Bridgeville shot is great, I'd love to know where that building is. I frequently go through Bridgeville to escape the horendous traffic on 50 between DC and the beachs.

I think South of the Border trumps anything in the east. I wouldn't call rest stops like those on the New Jersey Turnpike, or the Maryland House and Chesapeake House in Maryland, etc, as "attractions".

That gas station near Bridgeville is on Delaware Route 18 just south of where it turns at the intersection of Federalsburg Road and Cannon Road.
