Atlanta shows really well in that picture. BOA is really quite a huge building...I have been noticing that more and more recently.

I'm sorry but that picture is OLD. It was taken over a decade ago. No Riverplace, Bookends, Courtyard by Marriott, McBee Station, RiverWalk, Custom House, Field House at West End, etc.

I went to ATL and I loved it. I been there and drove past numerous times on business and such. But this past summer I had went for vacation and it wqas a blast. Stayed over off of GA13 on Sydney Marcus Blvd. at the Marriot place right infront of all that retail and by the bus stop.
Well, Atlanta near GA Aquarium and Coke was awesome. Then on the way to Stone Mountain we happened to Pass Through Buckhead. It looked incredibly boring. Like a typical suburban Office Park similar to Southpark Minus the mall or Ballantyne but with the skyline of something exciting-ish. Did I just go at the wrong time? (It was 4th of July weekend). I went down the main street (I think) but I'm just curious about it. Midtown Atlanta was also sorta Blah. So same question for Midtown. All I saw were Some office towers that appeared closed for the holidays and some residential towers that had no activity at the base neither (this was at nearly 11AM or so, 4th of July Weekend also) Uptown Atlanta (When I say Uptown, I mean the main shindig) was ery bustling beyond my expectations and I already had held Atlanta to high standards

Buckhead is not on the way to Stone Mountain from where you stayed, but I'll definitely give you that most of it is a vertical office park with some mixed-use and super high end condos meant for older empty nesters sprinkled in. There are two village areas off of Peachtree that you would not have seen that are a little better and are improving every year. They are host to dozens of bars that make the area pretty loud at night, but aside from that the village areas are meant for weekday errand running and shopping and are very quiet on weekends (aside from nights). Also, you mention no mall, but the south's two most famous malls are caddy corner to each other in Buckhead (Lenox and Phipps). I don't know how you missed them. I don't think what you saw was Buckhead (Decatur maybe?).
There is no Uptown, and you probably confused what you thought was Uptown with Midtown. Midtown is not nearly as active as River North Chicago or the inner core of Boston, but aside from early mornings it is a pretty active place (I have yet to find something comparable elsewhere in the south). 4th of July is not a big holiday for Atlanta, though, and way more people leave than come or stay (this was even my first 4th in Atl in my 5 years here...it was no big deal as to be expected in Atlanta). If people stay in the area, they go to Lake Lanier or any other lake. The biggest fireworks show is on a parking deck at Lenox Mall in Buckhead (i.e. lame) and this year most shows were canceled due to storms. The best times to explore Atlanta by far are in the spring when people climb out of the woodwork that is winter, and in the fall when things cool down and the leaves change color for a couple weeks. This summer was brutally hot (all over the south). It was not pleasant to be out. All of the festivals and parades are in the spring and fall (Dragon*Con is really the only big thing in the summer, and even that is in September). Next time you're in Atlanta, stay at a boutique hotel downtown and explore the neighborhoods surrounding downtown and midtown. The best restaurants are now on the westside, in Inman Park, Midtown, and even Virginia Highlands. The best warehouse districts are mostly to the south, west, and northwest of downtown along Marietta St (with a few cool areas to the east along Memorial). Downtown is really cool and vibrant when big conventions are in town, but otherwise can still be shady. It has gotten better with the re-opening of the roof of the Glenn, the opening of Meehan's and Juke Joint on Peachtree, 200 Peachtree, the Ellis, and Intermezzo Cafe. There is still a sometimes rowdy inner city element that can make it intimidating for professional types if there aren't a ton of conventioners walking around, too.

Like Simms alluded to, the "life" in Atlanta is mostly in the "villages" which are sometimes nestled just underneath (Midtown and Buckhead), or a couple hundred yards from the scrapers. Make it out to Little 5 Points, Virginia Highlands, Luckie/Marietta, Old 4th Ward, East Atlanta Village, Inman Park etc. next time you're in town and looking for something other than tall condos and offices. |

^ It is. Bigger than I thought
![]() Nice Skyline, question though. I've been to Orlando (Universial Studios Theme Park) but never had been to the downtown portion. After looking at them (lovely) pictures, it doesn't appear that there is a lot of retail at the bases of the buildings. And seeing these pictures of Atlanta is depressing! I miss Atlanta So Much! Love the Zoo & (expensive) Aquarium

Just a thought... Isn't Charlotte finally legit enough to retire that stupid Uptown bs?
It's so embarrassingly folksy, not befitting of the city that it has become/ wants to be. Last edited by spencer114; October 7th, 2011 at 10:02 PM. |

I never imagined Orlando could fill out like this. When I first went through there in 1975, there were like, two 8 story buildings!
And Charlotte will get a LOT of attention next year. I joins the ranks of the big boys with the DNC!
