![]() http://www.flickr.com/photos/disneya...n/photostream/ There are several cities that use "uptown" to describe an area of the city...some are downtown and some are intown neighborhoods. I don't see anything wrong with it - it kinda gives Charlotte an edge as opposed to being an embarrassment. |

Stole these from a poster named BeigeHammer at the following link: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=17&f=2765&t=8015127&p=1 Think he said he used a Droid Phone to take them while flying around one day. Anyway one of Louisville, Frankfort, KY, and Cincy with Newport, KY in the foreground.

When signs say stuff such as "uptown north" "uptown south" etc. And the news and city officials refer to it as uptown, of course we're gonna keep saying it. Transplants even coin the word uptown. I rarely hear people around here say downtown Charlotte as opposed to uptown. Small towns I refer to as downtowns though. Larger cities uptown. And in Charlotte, uptown is used moreso as a proper noun and downtown just a pronoun. Everyone knows uptown. Refers to Charlotte's center city. Downtown could be gastonia, kings mountain, concord, etc. |

quantam x i think the picture of miami and the beach is beautiful. i like the way the sun seems to be shaded over the city. i wish it could have been just a little bit closer to the ground, but the street grid gives it a complete architectural. i don't know why i see so many slapping and trying to make miami less than it is---city, resort, fake skyline, hotel skyline, etc., etc. i think it is beautiful, and it is amazing that those huge skyscrapers are anchored on islands, inslets, and marshes. in memphis, some of the developers of mud island and harbor town island go all to pieces if another developer or citizen suggests a building over 4 or 5 stories, much less a mid-rise or high-rise. i suggested a hotel and a mixed hotel/condo in the 22 to 32 story range, and you would have thought that i had suggested to build a nuclear facility that would sink to the center of the earth because of its weight, weak bedrock, and every other excuse that could be brought up. nearly every city in america can place skyscrapers and highrises on the banks of their rivers, w/ the seeming exception of memphis.
nevertheless, i like your photos, and i think that miami is so fortunate to have such a beautiful city, w/ so many natural amenities. beautiful! |

Charlotte does. That's the only one I know of. Not a big deal. Down/mid/up all seem arbitrary to me. Each could mean "big time" or "in the center", stuff like that.
