Honda to set up third two-wheeler plant in India

Quote:
New Delhi, May 26:

Japanese auto giant Honda today said it will set up a third two-wheeler manufacturing facility in India at Narsapuram, in Karnataka, with an installed annual capacity of 12 lakh units by 2013.

The company, which recently exited from the country’s largest two-wheeler maker, Hero Honda, will also double the output of the upcoming second plant at Tapukara in Rajasthan to 12 lakh units by the end of this fiscal.

Honda Motor Co, however, did not mention any investment figure for expanding its business in the growing Indian two-wheeler market.

“In order to realise Honda’s vision to provide good products with speed and affordability, the third plant will be built in the Bangalore area.”

“The third plant is scheduled to become operational in the first half of 2013, with annual production capacity of 12 lakh units,” the company said in a statement.

The company’s wholly-owned subsidiary — Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) — is currently investing about Rs 500 crore for setting up its second facility at Tapukara and it will be inaugurated on June 1 with an initial installed capacity of 6 lakh units a year.

“HMSI decided to double the annual production capacity of this plant to 12 lakh units in March, 2012,” the company said.

“India represents the world’s second largest motorcycle market behind only China and industry-wide motorcycle sales in India for 2010 reached 1.13 crore units (up 30 per cent compared with 2009).

“HMSI’s sales have grown steadily, with 2010 sales of approximately 15.26 lakh units (up 40 per cent compared to 2009), achieving a record high for 10 consecutive years,” the company said.

Boschs fastest growing auto market is India

As China Car Market Tapers Off,German Giant To Invest More In India

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: India will this year become the fastest growing market for auto components major Robert Bosch GmbH.The company, which also has operations in industrial technology, consumer goods and building technology in India, saw a turnover of Rs 9,270 crore, growing at 36% in 2010.
Bernd Bohr, chairman of the automotive group, said that with the China market now tapering off owing to regulations that make car registrations more stringent,India will grow faster than China in 2011.
Bosch is hoping to gain from the fast-paced industrial growth in India, especially the booming automobiles sector.Car sales in India in the year to March 2010 jumped 30%,the fastest pace in more than a decade.
Over the past decade, our sales in India have increased more than five-fold and we expect this growth trend to continue, Bohr told reporters at a news conference here on Thursday.
The 47 billion euro Bosch Group plans to invest Rs 2,500 crore in India by 2013 for capacity augmentation, business diversification and R&D.This will include setting up a new electrical drives manufacturing facility in Chennai. This facility is expected to start production by 2012.
The investments will also go into software engineering and support for global powertrain electronics development for gasoline and diesel engines, along with hybrid and electric vehicles.Powertrain electronics enables accurate air-fuel ratios, and helps in CO2 emission reductions.
Aproportion of the investment would also be used for new products for meeting unique Indian market needs.Having met Bharat Stage 3 norms with its inline pumps, further efforts are being made to upgrade these pumps for higher injection pressure to meet forthcoming emission norms,Bohr said. For the low-priced vehicle segment,a common rail for enhanced fuel efficiency is also being worked upon.
Bosch India has 22,500 employees now,and this number is expected to go to 28,000 by 2013.

Toyota to hire 1,500 people in India by next year

Quote:
Japanese car-maker Toyota today said it will hire about 1,500 people for its Indian operations by next year as it gradually expands its production capacity in the country.

The company, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group, is investing Rs 1,650 crore to ramp up its production capacity by one lakh units and for increasing localisation of components by 2014.

"We will be hiring about 1,500 permanent employees by 2012 to meet our expansion demand. In addition to this, we will hire some contract workers also," Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Deputy Managing Director (Commercial) Shekar Viswanathan told PTI on the sidelines of an Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) summit here.

The company will hire people across various disciplines as the expansion programme gradually unfolds, he added.

TKM currently employs around 4,500 employees at its two facilities in Bangalore, of which 70 per cent are permanent employees.

At present, the company is expanding the combined capacity of its two facilities in Bangalore to 2.1 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units by 2012.

Subsequently, the capacity at the first plant will be hiked further to 1,00,000 units from 90,000 units, while the output at the second plant will be increased to 2,10,000 units from 1,20,000 units.

The firm invested Rs 3,200 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility, with an initial installed capacity of 70,000 units per annum, which is now being expanded to 1.2 lakh units annually.

The company had also announced plans to set up an engine plant and expand its transmissions capacity at a combined investment of Rs 500 crore to cater to demand for its Etios and Liva models.

The company will launch the diesel variants of its small car Liva and sedan Etios in India on Friday.

The firm had introduced the petrol version of the Etios last year, while the Liva model was rolled out in June this year.

At present, the company has capacities in place to manufacture 6,000 units of the Etios and Liva every month. It will ramp up the production volume to 6,800-7,000 units per month by October, including the diesel variants.

Earlier, the company had said it plans to sell 60,000 units of both the Etios and Liva this year, of which over 20,000 units are likely to be the Liva model.

The company has so far sold about 30,000 units of the two models since their respective launches.

Quote:
To become operational in 2013 with 1.2 million capacity

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: In Honda,Karnataka has managed to get another big automotive giant to drop anchor in the state after Japanese car major Toyota, and Swedish bus manufacturer,Volvo.Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HSMI) a whollyowned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company,Japan, has begun work in setting up of its 3rd manufacturing facility in India,at Kolar (near Bangalore ),at an investment of Rs 1,000 crore.
The facility, which is spread across 350,000 sq metres, will become operational in the first half of 2013 with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million units. Both scooters and motorcycles will be produced at this facility.
HMSIs product line-up in India includes three automatic scooters, six motorcycles in the 110cc to 250 cc segment, and three superbikes in the 1000cc segment that are imported as completely built units.
Once the new plant becomes operational HMSI's total annual production capacity will go up to 4 million units per annum, including 1.6 million units at its first plant at Manesar,Haryana, and 1.2 million units at its second plant in Tapukara (Rajasthan).
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new plant,Keita Muramatsu, president & CEO,HSMI,said the increase in capacity by the addition of the new plant would prepare the company for further growth, cut down the waiting period of vehicles, and cater to rising demand in India's 11.32 million units two-wheeler market. At present three products -- Activa,Shine and Unicorn -- have an average waiting period of three months, which the company wants to bring down to 15 days to 30 days.
India is too big a market. We have two facilities in the north, but we needed a facility in the south and in particular Karnataka as it is one of the big southern markets for HSMI, said Muramatsu. The southern region is the largest for HMSI,accounting for 30% its total sales.
Company officials said that a number of ancillary units will come up around its new plant, which will help them have a localization level of 80%.
As of 2010,HMSI had a 13% market share in the Indian two-wheeler market, which it plans to increase to 14% (21 lakh units) by the end of December 2011.
While HMSI enjoys a 40% market share in the scooter segment,it has only a 7% market share in the motorcycle segment.
HMSI sold 16.56 lakh units in 2010-11,a growth of 30% over the 12.7 lakh units of the previous fiscal.Scooter sales account for 54% of the total sales.

Volvo plans expansion in India

Volvo plans Rs 400-cr investment in India
Quote:
Press Trust of India / Bangalore October 13, 2011, 18:02 IST
Volvo today announced plans to invest about Rs 400 crore in India in the next five years.

"With this kind of investment plan, India will emerge as the second biggest hub after China," Volvo Bus Corporation President and CEO Hakan Karlsson told reporters here.

In the first phase, Volvo plans to expand its industrial establishment capacity in Hoskote to 2,500 units in the next two years. At present, the facility can produce 1,000 vehicles, he said.
The company also plans to introduce a range of new products starting in 2012, he said.

"This announcement backs Volvo buses earlier announcement to become a one billion dollar company selling 5,000 buses in 2015," Karlsson said.

The second phase will see Volvo setting up a new industrial establishment, he said.

"Business planning process has already begun to set up the second factory in India," Volvo Buses India MD and CEO Akash Passey said, but declined to divulge where it would be.

Globally, Volvo has the biggest plan in China to expand its industrial establishment capacity to 3,500, Karlsson said.

The company also plans to expand capacity to 30,000 globally by 2015, which would be thrice the existing capacity, he said.

"We plan to expand our establishments in Asia to 15,000 capacity," Karlsson added.

Volvo expects global revenues to grow by Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000 crore by 2015, Volvo Bus Corporation Senior Vice President (Business Region International) Rune Lundberg said.

"At present our global revenues are in the range of Rs 14,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore," he said.

Scania to invest in a factory in Bangalore
Quote:
Pankaj Doval, TNN | Jan 31, 2012, 03.59PM IST
NEW DELHI: Swedish truck maker Scania will be investing Rs 2.25 billion over the next five years to set up a plant in Bangalore.

This plant will serve as a completely-knocked down (CKD) assembly unit for truck and bus chassis during phase 1 of operations.

"This investment furthers Scania's committed to the Indian market and this is the right moment for us. With the commercial vehicles segment likely to register a higher volume growth of 8-10 per cent this year, the outlook for the industry is very promising," Henrik Fagrenius, Managing Director of Scania, said.

Bus body building of city buses and coaches and service workshops for trucks and buses will also be part of the facility at a later point of time.

Scania had last year announced plans for India. It envisages around 2000 heavy haulage trucks and 1000 inter-city buses and coaches to be rolled out from this plant within five years. Besides these vehicles, Scania is also preparing to sell engines to its OEM customers.

Scania will employ upto 800 people in this facility over the next five years.

TRIUMPH MOTORCYCLES TO SET UP ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS IN Narasapura Near Bangalore

Quote:
British motorcycle brand Triumph Motorcycle will launch a range of high performance motorcycles in the Indian market mainly aimed at motorcycle enthusiasts later this year. The motorcycle showcased its motorcycle range at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, where it pleasantly surprised many of the Indian enthusiast motorcycle riders when it announced prices of its CKD models, as the prices were very competitive. To assemble motorcycles in India, Triumph is said to have identified a 40 acre land parcel at Narsapura, situated on the Bangalore-Chennai highway.

Triumph Motorcycle Range

In the recent past, Karnataka has seen a big ticked investment in the motorcycle segment with Japanese motorcycle giant Honda setting up a plant close to the state’s capital of Bangalore. The country’s largest two wheeler maker, Hero MotoCorp, is also said to be finalizing plans to set up a plant close to Dharwad, Karnataka. With Triumph also planning to set up an assembly unit in Karnataka, this southern state will now play host to over four motorcycle makers including TVS, which has a manufacturing facility at Mysore.

Triumph Tiger 800XC

The location of Triumph’s plant at Narasapura, off Bangalore, is said to be strategic as the motorcycle maker is said to have chosen this location due to its accessibility to the Chennai port. Triumph India also plans to build affordable premium sports motorcycles with displacements of about 350cc in the coming yearsand these motorcycles could also be exported out of India. Therefore, the location to high quality port infrastructure is quite critical to the motorcycle maker, which will also assemble motorcycled through the completely knocked down(CKD) kit route, with the kits arriving from Great Britain.

Although the Triumph assembly unit will take nearly a year to become operational, the motorcycle maker is said to be all set to launch its motorcycles in the Indian market over the next few months. It is also said that Triumph plans to price four of its models very competitively, despite them being brought into India as CBUs initially. These models would later be assembled by Triumph once the assembly unit is up and running. That said, 3 motorcycle models in Triumph’s 7 bike portfolio for the Indian market would continue to remain completely built units(CBU) as they are low volume products.

State plans to develop auto hub in Narasapur near Bangalore

Quote:
One year ago nobody knew about Narasapur, a village in Kolar district situated about 52 kms from Bangalore. But on today, the village is on course to become a major automobile hub in South India as several automotive giants are in the process of setting up shop there. Thanks to the efforts of the department of commerce and industry, government of Karnataka, which is preparing to organise the second edition of global investors’ meet (GIM) in June this year, the automobile companies are making a beeline to Karnataka.

Already, Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Limited (HMSI), a subsidiary of Japanese auto major Honda Motor Corp, is setting up its fourth two-wheeler plant in Narasapur at an investment of Rs 1,350 crore.

The state government has allotted 100 acres to the company. The new plant would go on stream by the first half of 2013. According to the company, the assembly unit has the capacity to produce 1.2 million units a year in the first phase. Eventually, the production capacity would be ramped up to 1.8 million vehicles a year in the second phase. The company has created employment opportunity for 3,000 persons, a top state government official said.
“In addition to HMSI, the government has also allotted about 150 acres more to Honda’s Tier-I suppliers for developing an ancillary park. In all, 13 vendors would be setting up their manufacturing units in the park with a combined investment of over Rs 2,000 crore,” M Maheshwar Rao, commissioner for industrial development and director of industries and commerce, told Business Standard.

HMSI’s vendors include XCD Corporation India Pvt Ltd, Musashi, Advik, Badve, Jay Ushin, Nippon Compo India and T S Interseat among others.

Apart from HMSI and its vendors, Swedish truck and bus maker Scania is setting up its truck and bus body building facility in Narasapur Industrial Area. To add to this list is UK-based premium bike maker Triumph Motorcycles, which has zeroed in on Narasapur for a local assembly plant. The company has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the State government, Rao said.

About 40 acres land has been identified for the company for its plant. Scania has chosen Narasapur to set up its truck assembly plant at an investment of Rs 150 crore. The facility will serve as a completely knocked down (CKD) assembly unit for truck and bus chassis during phase one of the operations. It will employ about 800 people in this facility over the next five years.

Scania plans to roll out 2,000 heavy trucks and 1,000 inter-city buses and coaches from this plant in the next five years. Besides this, it plans to sell about 1,500 engines within the same period. In the next phase, it will build trucks and buses from the same facility. During the first phase, it will initially assemble trucks and by 2014, it plans to roll out buses.

Other than automobile companies, the government has allotted land to Mahindra Aerospace Pvt Ltd to manufacture small aircraft at Narasapur. The company will invest Rs 285 crore in this facility.
