China's Marine Oil & Gas Fields, Drilling, Exploration and Security | Nansha (Spratlys) Islands

Thread for any news about China's Marine Oil & Gas Fields, Drilling, Exploration and Security | Nansha (Spratlys) Islands.

Any comment is welcomed in principle, and anyone has the right to voice their opinion but I hope everyone can do it with civility and try not to turn this thread into .... you know.

Yes, you know, South China Sea involves many disputed areas claimed by China, Vietnam, Phillipines, Malaysia, Brunei and even Indonesia, but common masses in every country involved there cannot do anything and in reality anything they want to do (here or otherwise) seemingly doesn't count, hence we'd better leave the dispute with politicians and only talk some sense here.

Thanks.

China aims to beat rivals to deep sea oil and gas fields

China's new oil rig will enhance its oil extraction capacity from deep sea areas such as the South China Sea. (Photo/CFP)

China has inaugurated its most advanced deep sea oil platform capable of operating at up to 3,000 meters below the surface of the ocean, boosting China's offshore drilling capabilities and enhancing its leverage in securing marine resources, according to the official Global Times.

The oil rig CNOOC981 was launched Monday (May 23) in Shanghai, where it was delivered to China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), which spent 6 billion yuan (US$922.37 million) developing the rig.

The 31,000-ton rig was designed to drill deep sea oil fields. It was built over the course of three years by China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC). The rig will enhance China's oil extraction capacity from 500-meter-deep seas to 12,000 meters.

The oil rig will start its voyage from Shanghai on Thursday (May 26) for a trial cruise before starting to drill in the South China Sea in July, according to the state-run People's Daily.

The CNOOC981 rig is "undoubtedly a milestone in China's oil drilling industry," Lin Boqiang, director of the Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, told Global Times. "It is always a first-come-first-served game when vying for non-renewable resources in disputed sea areas, as the resources are not infinite."

The capability to drill so far down is a differentiating factor that countries like Vietnam and the Philippines have not yet acquired, Lin added.

By mid-2010, 180 oil and natural gas fields and more than 200 oil-gas-bearing strata had been detected in the South China Sea, with most located at between 500 and 2,000 meters. Though large oil fields have been found in the area, exploitation by Chinese oil drillers seems to have been slow.

In 2009, China inaugurated a project to drill its biggest and deepest offshore natural gas field, the Liwan 3-1 field, at a cost of 35 billion yuan (US$5.4bn). The gas field will begin production in 2013.

China has stepped up efforts to explore and materialize offshore resources. The CNOOC981 oil rig is only part of a 15 billion yuan (US$2.3bn) project to ramp up the deep sea exploration fleet, the Oriental Outlook reported. Following the giant rig, more oil exploitation facilities will be put to use.

The country is seeking more dependence of the marine industries as a strategic development move. The government's 12th five-year plan (2011-2015) advocates greater scientific and systematic utilization of marine resources and coastal areas as energy demand soars and inland resources drop.

The world’s most advanced deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform built in Shanghai, China (Mainland)

http://www.cnkeyword.info/the-worlds...hina-mainland/

NANTONG, Jiangsu - China has taken a step forward in its efforts to explore deep-water oil and gas, with the announcement that two advanced pieces of deep-water equipment capable of operating at depths of 3,000 meters are near completion.

The sixth-generation deepwater semi-submersible drilling unit will begin commercial operations in the South China Sea in the second half of this year, according to Wang Yilin, chairman of China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC), the main designer and builder of the drilling platform.

The drilling unit, named 981, is nearing completion after more than three years of construction in Shanghai, the company said on Monday.

The 136-meter-high drilling platform, which cost CNOOC 6 billion yuan ($923 million), is expected to begin commercial operations in the northern South China Sea in the third quarter, following testing that will begin within days in Zhoushan city in Zhejiang province, Jin Xiaojian, general manger of CNOOC's Engineering Department, said earlier.

The unit was co-designed and constructed with China State Shipbuilding Corp, and will be operated by China Oilfield Services Ltd, one of the listed arms of CNOOC, the country's largest offshore oil producer by capacity.

The project's completion marks the Chinese marine oil and gas industry's important move advancing its "deep-water strategy", said Wang, who was appointed to his current position in April to replace Fu Chengu, the State-owned company's longest-serving president, who joined CNOOC in 1982.

Before the deep-water drilling platform, China was only able to explore, develop and produce offshore oil and gas at depths of up to 300 meters.

Fu said last year that CNOOC aims to produce 50 million tons of oil equivalent from the deep-water field by the end of 2020, after reaching its first 50 million tons of oil equivalent from the sea last year.

The platform is expected to reach dynamic break-even within 12 years, in accordance with international practices, Jin said. He added that there are around 20 such deep-water semi-submersible drilling units in operation or under construction around the world.

Construction of deep-water oil, gas equipment nears completion

CNOOC announced on Tuesday that China's first deep-water crane vessel, which can lay pipes 3,000 meters below the surface, is expected to be completed in October.

The vessel, like the drilling platform, was one of five types of vessels that CNOOC decided to build with a 15 billion yuan total investment for deep-water exploration during the 11th Five-Year Plan (2005-2010).

Construction of the pipe-laying crane, in which CNOOC invested about 2.8 billion yuan, commenced in September 2008 in Nantong, Jiangsu province, in eastern China.

The vessel, named 201, is expected to start commercial operations in the Liuhua oilfield in the eastern South China Sea late this year, and is set to work in the Liwan 3-1 deep-water gas field next year, according to Xu Wenbing, deputy general manager of the project.

The Liwan 3-1 deep-water gas field is the country's first deep-water and biggest offshore gas field. It was discovered in 2006 and has contingent reserves of up to 170 billion cubic meters of gas.

Yup

Ships still need to communicate in a common language on the seas.

Can you imagine non-Chinese trying to contact a ship by radio if they don't know how to pronounce the characters?

And what do they enter into the computer?
