Hasn't the Pan Am games hurt torontos chances of hosting an Olympics though? First there was this stadium debacle that was resolve just recently. Secondly the new facilities being built in Toronto are nice and all but would they be recycled for the olympics? The athletes village will be too small where as the aquatic centre will be too utilitarian for the Olympic games. I think Torono should skip out on this.

I'm not 100% convinced, either... it may be a case of us being the patsies who put forth a good bid to give respectability to a selection system that decides beforehand what the winner will be. Also, if the head of the Canadian Olympic Assoc spearheading this is from Quebec City, he may be as lukewarm as Dick Pound was in representing out last bid. Quebec City also has its eye on a future bid, just as Dick Pound had his eye on securing Vancouver's Olympic bid.

I somewhat agree with Taller. Winning an Olympics is much more than having a perfect technical bid. You have to build relations with major officials, sporting federations, and IOC voters. Toronto and Canada as a whole have been working on relations ever since we lost our 2008 bid. I believe we would have full support from South America, the Caribbean, Australia and some European countries that want to bid for 2024 instead and don't want a Euro city winning 2020 (France, Spain, etc.). Toronto also has a lot of work to get those African votes, that's what they need to win it.

What if NYC bids again? Or what if Ford gets involved? Bye bye Olympics.

No worries, the only reason why I called you on it was I googled it back when we were bidding. I thought Toronto was a shoe for the same reasons you did. Now I know better and want to go to Lima. Bogota is nice as well but crazy crime. Caracas is a city about the same size as Toronto in an amazing setting but it has terrible infrastructure. The only city that was no real competition for Toronto was Birmingham Alabama.

South America would be a good choose for the more light skin folks.

I'm pretty sure Lima is indeed considered part of the "third world". Well, actually, nothing is called "third world" anymore but it is certainly part of the developing world.

I'm usually very supportive of Olympic bids, but I'm leery of spending $1 billion on a new athletics stadium when Toronto can't even fill the smaller stadium it has now. Toronto is not a city in need of an 80,000 seater, but that's what it would take to win a bid.

I'm in absolutely no rush to see Toronto get the summer Olympics.
This city seriously still needs to build up it's infrastructure and public transit before we should consider another bid. |

Toforumer over on UT says rumours are the COC will be having a formal announcement in late July on Toronto 2020!!!!!!!
Usually that happens hand in hand with a successful bid. Our competition for now looks like only Rome. Probably one of the few western European cities with worse infrastructure than ours. |

If we win the Olympics, Ford's dream of bringing the NFL here may come true.

If the COC announces a formal bid in late July as rumoured, I will party! |

Absolutely. One of the biggest benefits of having the Olympics is all the Federal money poured into transit. The winning city gets a cool billion from the IOC right off the bat to kick start things.

Also with the new Meadowlands Stadium already complete, there really is little benefit of hosting the games. I remember the renderings for the proposed Olympics stadium that would have been the future home of the Jets. To be honest, I was hoping NYC would host the games just so that stadium would become a reality. Looked pretty awesome.

I know, the NFL doesn't stand a chance in Toronto in terms of attendance. But the presence of an Olympic stadium would attract the NFL moreso than they are today, but it'll still fail.

But Filip, I thought this city was broke. We can't keep spending money on unnecessary things like The Olympics, bridges or festivals. That's just more gravy and in a city as poor as we are, gravy is a luxury. Get with the program people. We are POOR and we need to live within our means. Don't go getting big ideas about spending money we don't have. We ain't London or NYC, you know. We's just poor old Toronto.
