I was more hoping for Munich, as I have ties to that city, oh well..

This will make the fight for 2020 much easier. Rome is in bananas and Madrid is in the heart of the economic collapse of Spain.

toronto is still an underdog because of 2010, i think some other big city will step in and keep the rotation going (dubai, europe somewhere), but yeah, our chances aren't terrible. it'll take an impressive bid.

Third time's the charm eh? Well, if Toronto gets 2020 after its third bid, one thing's for certain, we're gonna have a crappy logo (think pan am games logo)

Personally, the 2008 bid logo seems more interesting and original. I have no idea what the 96 logo is suppose to represe-- Oh wait, now I see it XD.

While I want T.O. to win the 2020 Olympics, as a westerner I also want Edmonton to host the 2017 World Expo, hopefully Harper will change his mind before the actual bidding process will begin.

So we will find out next week if the COC supports a Toronto 2020 Summer Olympics bid or a Quebec City 2022 Winter Olympics bid. I think it's a no brainer.

It's about time we hosted the Summer Olympics. We've had the winter version twice in a row now. Sorry Quebec City, but we should concentrate on landing the Summer Olympics: either 2020 or 2024! Can you say Downtown Relief Line, Queen Subway, and maybe even a new 40,000 seat football specific stadium for the Argonauts?

(The Argonauts haven't had a suitable facility since 1958 when they played at Varsity Stadium.)

The IOC seems to be interested in virgin territory: 2014 Russia, 2016 Brazil, 2018 South Korea. Turkey would keep with that pattern of going to new places.

Detroit gets the "yeah, why not" vote from me. It's also a bit of a sympathy vote but never mind.

They've got lots of abandoned buildings for the Athlete's Village, two airports, empty streets for the marathon & race-walking & cycling events, an NFL-sized stadium, etc.

And they really need the "investment" money from the government and the world. Oh, and Canada still benefits because people will discover Windsor (city of Roses) and many of the visitors would plan to travel to Niagara Falls and Toronto if possible.

So if the Olympics cannot be in Toronto, I vote Detroit.

Cheers, m

I thought that the Queen Subway would be the DRL? Either way, I'd so almost anything to finally see it built. The Olympics would be the icing on the cake.

I really doubt that the USOC would be bidding for the 2020 Olympics XD; even if they want to there is no way they will get support from the federal government and much public support when people are more worried about jobs and the debt so close to getting America into default.

Well, as a nation they are not known for emotional restraint, so I would not set my hopes too high on that angle.

Well, Paris is out. France ruled out a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games:

I suspect this is Madrid's race to lose. I don't anticipate the USOC putting forward a bid for 2020. IMO, the USOC is more likely to put forward a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics, likely in Denver (with an outside chance for Lake Tahoe).

I think we have to acknowledge how Eurocentric the bidding process is. Every little country in Europe gets a vote, whereas every little State and Province in North America does not. If Europe wants Madrid to win, quite likely Madrid will win.

But does Europe really want Madrid to win?

And does Spain need to go into another round of spending to support another Olympics when they are in danger of major default?

I wonder how wise that would be (and how loudly the Germans, already angry over having to bail out Greece and a bit miffed about not having the Olympics in Munich) would be.

Cheers, m

The way I see it, given the current economic climate. I can see these cities bidding;

Istanbul
Rome
Tokyo
Madrid
Toronto
Baku

Spain is on the verge of going the way of Greece; but they have submitted it -which is currently pending approval from the government-, and I have the funny feeling that even if it'll push them further over the financial edge, they're national pride will trump economic common sense.

And if the U.S. performs a miracle by putting forth a reasonable applicant submission that has approval from the U.S. Government within two months.

New York
Chicago
Dallas
Minneapolis.
