TBS | Tbilisi International Airport

In February 2007, the reconstruction project was finished. The project consisted of construction of a new international terminal, car park, improvements to the apron, taxiway and runway and acquisition of ground handling equipment at Tbilisi International Airport. A rail link to the city centre has been constructed. There is an infrequent rail service to the city centre of Tbilisi (6 trains per day in each direction). George W. Bush Avenue leads from the airport to downtown Tbilisi.

The airport is a product of a contemporary and functional design, boasting high technology. It is designed to provide the optimum flow of both passengers and luggage from the parking lot to the planes with a 25,000 square meter total usable area. It has the ability and flexibility to easily facilitate future expansions without interrupting terminal operations. It has been fitted with high-tech contemporary systems, keeping passenger convenience and efficiency of the terminal operations in mind, throughout functional spaces organized in an elegant manner. The Food and Beverage operations at the Tbilisi International Airport are carried out by BTA at 7 points with a staff of 75, while ATU provides Duty Free services at its four stores.

The implementing agency and the borrower for the project is TAV Urban Georgia, a concessionaire and SPV for the construction and operation of Tbilisi International Airport.

The total project cost was 90.5 million USD. The capacity of the new terminal building is 2.8 million passengers per year.

In 2007, the airport handled 615,873 passengers, representing an increase of 8.5 % over 2006. The number of aircraft movements increased by 18.7%.

In 2009, the airport handled 702,373 passengers and 12,245 tonnes of cargo, in 2010 it handled 820,000 passengers.

As a result of the successful negotiations carried out by TAV Georgia the operator company of Tbilisi International Airport , two new air companies have to enter Georgia’s air market. Starting from 2nd of June air company Air Astana will operate service to Tbilisi International Airport offering the route Almaty-Tbilisi-Almaty three times a week with Embraer E 190 Aircraft. Moreover, China Southern Airlines will launch its service to Tbilisi on June 9th offering passengers flight Urumqi-Tbilisi-Urumqi with Boeing 737, Boeing 757 and Airbus 330 three times a week. The agreement between China Southern Airlines and TAV Georgia was signed on 16th of May.

China Southern Airlines is the world’s fifth-largest airline measured by passengers carried and Asia’s largest airline in terms of both fleet size and passengers carried. It’s also the fifth-largest airline in the world in domestic passenger traffic. The airline flies to 121 destinations in world’s 65 countries using a fleet of 442 aircrafts. In 2010, China Southern Airlines carried 76.5 million domestic and international passengers.

Air Astana is the national carrier of Kazakhstan and operates scheduled domestic and international services in world’s 44 countries using a fleet of 24 aircrafts. Route Almaty-Tbilisi-Almaty will be scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Commencing services to Georgia by such high-ranked air companies as China Southern Airlines and Air Astana is a very significant event not only for Georgia but for the whole Caucasus region, considering the potential of these air carriers and passenger handling volumes throughout the world.

Since the beginning of this year three new international air companies have entered Georgia’s air market, which was resulted by the active campaign carried out by TAV Georgia, intending to attract more air carriers and to increase the passenger traffic to the country.

You're quit right about the security checkers and food, but it's not really crowded. It's only crowded at night.

I can see you have been at that airport, let me ask you did you fly with Lufthansa?

It is very surpriseble, that the security checkers are rude, because the same situation was with the security on the border with turkey and when the president found out that, he turned many of them out , so the airport security must be fully in fear tears...

Flydubai gets official seal of approval for Tbilisi route
Posted on 12 September 2011 in Route Planning & Tourism

As the only airline to offer direct flights from the UAE to Tbilisi, flydubai received an official seal of approval from the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, George Karbelashvili, who hailed the entry of flydubai into Georgia as an important milestone in the development of relations between the two nations.

On his official visit to the UAE and accompanied by Georgian state television, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, George Karbelashvili, commented: “Flydubai’s entry into Georgia is a momentous step in UAE-Georgia relations and I am sure flydubai’s connection between Tbilisi and Dubai will help to establish and strengthen ties between the countries. We have a number of common areas of interest such as banking, real estate, oil and gas and tourism; and this is the opportunity to step-up collaboration in these sectors while exploring new relationship avenues.”

Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO, flydubai said: “We are grateful to the Georgian authorities for welcoming flydubai into Tbilisi. As Georgia’s largest city as well as its industrial, social, and cultural centre, Tbilisi is gaining prominence in the Middle East both as a business and leisure destination. Also, improving air links between Dubai to Central and Eastern Europe is of great strategic importance to us. There are more than 55,000 expatriates from this region residing in the UAE and more than a million tourists visiting the emirates every year. We hope our network of direct flights will play a part in making travel between the UAE and Central and Eastern Europe easier and more affordable.”

Located at the crossroads of West Asia and Eastern Europe, Georgia has one of the strongest and fastest developing economies in the region and in recent years has made foreign investment more attractive through reduced regulation and taxes. It is also one of the members of the GUAM Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development along with Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

Tbilisi is flydubai's 45th destination, with the UAE low-cost airline currently operating five routes to former Soviet states: Yerevan (Armenia) Baku (Azerbaijan), Yekaterinburg and Samara (Russia) and Ashgabat (Turkmenistan). In addition, flydubai will be launching two additional routes to Russia with flights to Kazan beginning 14 September 2011, and flights to Ufa beginning 17 September 2011. The airline’s flights to Ukraine will take off to Kiev and Kharkiv from 16 September 2011 and to Donetsk from 17 September 2011.
