German Maifest in São Paulo

Today I went to the party of the German community in Sao Paulo.

Currently there are about 375 000 german surnames registered at the memorial of the immigrant from city of Sao Paulo.

i realized that us-americans and germans have something in common, if people picture usually americans then they're picture them as cowboy-hat wearing, horse riding and yeeehaa yelling folks.
and if you picture germans, you picture them as lederhosen wearing, beerdrinking jodel fellas with some sausages in their mouths and some blonde heidis in dirndls next to them.

and people celebrate them also all over the world in this way.

klischees, klischees

other than that nice insight into the south american maifest turmoil, thanks for sharing

interestingly, I never heard of Mayfests here in southern Brazil (although several towns have Oktoberfests).

BUT a few cities had KERBS in May... which seems to be dialect from Saarland for "fair".

never mind the greatest top model ever, Gisele Bündchen, is a brazilian german-descendant

(not sure how much you are into tennis or volleyball, but Brazil´s greatest tennis player ever, who won Roland Garros three times and was number 1 in the ranking, was Gustavo KUERTEN.)

and our current best volleyball player (and Brazil is the best volleyball country in he world) is Murilo Endres, also german descendant.

and Marianne Steinbrecher is one of the most important players of the feminine volleyball team.

you may wonder... well, but why no german descendants in football??

Well, to tell the truth, there are quite a few in the national brazilian league. But few of them are considered good enough to go to Europe and make worldwide fame.

BUT.. the current brazilian national team coach is Mano Menezes... full name? Luiz Antônio Venker Menezes

and the previous coach, from the South Africa World Cup? It was Dunga. German and Italian descendant. Full name? Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri. And if you remember, he was captain of the team that won the 1994 World Cup.

and remember Taffarel, the brazilian goalkeeper from 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups? Another german/italian descendant. While Taffarel is of course italian name, his middle name is Mergen: Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel. In my opinion, however, he always looked a bit like the POLISH pope John Paul II.

although Lucas Leiva (currently at Liverpool) looks a bit german (blond blue eyed) his name suggests he is only italian (Lucas Pezzini Leiva).
Of course, you can know someone´s full family tree by the name. Its entirely possible that his mother had a german mother´s family name and Italian (Pezzini) last name. And same thing with his dad. Mother´s family name is lost in the next generation (Lucas´)...

5 millions are direct descendants.
Have you never knew about Blumenau, Pomerode, Schroeder and other cities?
I think that we from Brazil should do some thead about this, showing the cities.
