I actually prefer the warm tan on this one:

Which is not quirky yellow like some earlier versions, but a lovely shade of ochre. The foundation also promotes it.

Light cream is all over Berlin and in the vicinity of the Stadtschloss already.
It would be a welcome change to have something more comforting here, in Berlin's often rather dire climate (outside of the warm months). It would also distance itself better from the modernist grayish eastside facade and everything that follows up around Marx-Engels-Forum and Alexanderplatz. Too many toned down, cold and sterile colours and buildings already.

Big Billboards

Have you recently seen the west "fassade" of the Stadtschloss? It's practically covered up with giant billboards for Samsung! I certainly hope that the organization that's coordinating the construction is charging them a bundle for the privilege.

The advertisement money mostly goes into financing the Humboldt Box, which informs about the Palace reconstruction and the future exhibitions.

Oh hadn't clicked on this thread in a while and just saw at the top of this page that they're going to make it the same colour as the Oldenburg palace. Always good to look for the best places for inspiration.

Sure that! Though we don't really know what the final colour selected will be like.

A beautiful reconstruction. This is just the start of an incredible faze to restore Berlin to its former glory.

Let's hope there are some more (important) reconstructions beyond what has already been planned, yes, but I don't think Berlin will (or should) be restored to its 'former glory'. There are many vocal opponents to this kind of work in Germany, especially in the capital, and it is a wonder the Stadtschloss is even being reconstructed. That fact that it is being built has only served to ossify the belief in these individuals that "zombies" should not appear in Germany's cityscapes. Indeed, a number of alarmist articles and papers have already been written by modernists in the past few years denouncing this kind of thing.

The fight to have anything reconstructed in Germany (and especially Berlin) gets more difficult every time something is, in fact, rebuilt. Time is also a factor. "How long is too long?" is being asked increasingly, in regards to the fact that most of these buildings have been missing from the world for nearly 80 years now. I believe the 100th anniversary of WWII will mark, for the large part, the end of major reconstructions in Europe.

Regardless, I think civic involvement is key to bringing parts of these old cities back to life. The problem is, of course, that I don't think this is being harnessed as effectively as it perhaps could be by those bodies that call for reconstruction in the first place.

What is the rationale of such groups for opposing reconstructions?

A variety of things.

In some cases, it's down to personal taste in architecture, with modern structures being preferred aesthetically to a classical reconstruction. This is usually an extension of modernist dogma/ideology that "form follows function" and "ornamentation is crime". Such assertions are touted as laws to successful architecture in the modern world, rather than the subjective beliefs they ultimately are. There is also apparently a lot of indoctrination in architectural teachings, and traditional elements/ideas are often associated with regression and a lack of 'fresh ideas'.

More often it's for political reasons, with terms such as "historical revisionism" being thrown around a lot. That is, the attempt to try and 'revise' less savoury aspects of history/society by overwriting them -- in this case the revival of past architectural heritage/demolition of others. These claims can, of course, have some merit depending on the political/social context of the area in question. If Japan were to begin reconstructing buildings of significance from its imperial period, for example, this might be cause for concern, due to the fact Japan has been accused of revising school history books to remove details of Japanese atrocities in WWII.

I'm not sure this is the case in Germany, though, which seems to be repentant and deeply aware of its past. With this in mind, I strongly support most reconstructions in Germany and abroad (within reason).

Awesome news: The dome, including lantern and cross, has now fully been donated.

They almost came! Almost... It looked for a while as if the fugly unity memorial wasn't going to be build and the government wanted to give several millions to Berlin to reconstruct the colonnades, but then plans for the unity memorial were revived and on top of that leftist politicians were against the recontruction of the colonnades anyway, even if gifted to them. No wonder...they tore the original down 70 years ago...

I personally would prefer a flag of Berlin or Germany on top of the lantern, not a cross!
