It was the bitter pill we had to swallow to make the palace reconstruction possible.
Like so many things in Germany, it had to be "politically correct" or whatever.

But I think the mistake was even on the side of the initiators. They never insisted on a full reconstruction and didn't carry out visualizations of the Spree facade. If they had done this, we might have been able to get it all. Who knows.

Actually if they had at least integrated, reconstructed or moved the north facade of the GDR palace to this side it would have been a fascinating fusion of history and still looked a lot better than this dreadful piece of ugliness they are constructing now on this side.

Great news! Berlin was such a beautiful city before WW II.

It's so unnecessary. Why not reconstruct the whole building true to the original?
It will look awful.
lets see if it is finished...

the modern facade can be changed into a original later, if it really looks that awful.

I am lucky, that finally a reconstruction in Berlin gets realized, i think Berlin should reconstruction more stuff. The GDR teared so many "Kaiser-time-buildings" after the war down...

We're only talking about the building itself here. Wouldn't it be actually interesting to know, what will be inside the building? The plans seem to be pretty advanced already. This site provides information about the different institutions inside the City Palace/Humboldt Forum floor by floor and even a little trailer (with English subtitles):

Its not only a "palace", it will be a great completion to the World Cultural Heritage "Museumsinsel"...

I thought of this originally too. Would have been a cool way to preserve history, appease those with GDR nostalgia, and provide a provocative contrast.

I'm not apposed to cost savings, or modernism, but i just cant get over how bland and unoriginal they are making the back of such an important building. I've seen much better ideas floated around this thread from people using photoshop, than the current plans. Heck, make it out of remands of the Berlin wall, use some creativity.

Potsdamer Stadtschloss

Another example of "adaptive reuse" is the rebuilding of the Potsdamer Stadtschloss for use as the Landtag building for Brandenburg. As in Berlin, the exterior is being restored to its prewar appearance while the interior is modern and designed to meet the needs of the legislature.

Great Video!

That's a really great video that was featured on the Berliner Zeitung site! If I were only going to restore some of the interior walls and not others, I would have opted for all modern on the inside while continuing the classic architectural style of the main building on around on the Spree River facade. Once you have departed from the original, why not make the fourth side match the other three?

Fantastic news this great building will be with us again.

Though its heart breaking to know the many beautiful buildings and cityscapes Europe lost during those war years.

What were we thinking!?
