Beyond that, however, the past is in fact worth keeping. A world in which all traces of the past are lost is a world in which human culture becomes un-rooted. There are many different arguments that cultural rootedness is desirable.

As to the question of the Quality of a replica (the Disney-Argument), the City Palace will differ vividly from a Disney-Castle as pertains to the quality of building materials, craftmanship, and the degree of being "true to the original". Off course, this only pertains to the Fassade, since that it all being replicated. The inside, on ist hand, will have a modern functionality. Thus, the Disney-arguments falls either way.
Anyone who labels the Berlin City Palace reconstruction as "Disneyesque" simply doesn't know the first thing about the principals of classical architecture so I wouldn't bother taking too much notice of them.

Thank you for posting all these nice historical views, Ludendörp!

It's always jawdropping to see how much remained of the Stadtschloss. Too bad it didn't belong to West-Berlin...

The current pace of the Stadtschloss reconstruction is quite astonishing:

Indeed, from the current pace one could guess that the exterior structure should be finished by the end of the year except for facade details etc. of course. Let's see how far they will get.

That's exactly what they claim: At the end of 2014 the building will be structurally complete.

Nice images! But please - either call it Eagle Column or Adlersäule, or go for the best option and use both. Thanks.

Regarding the Eagle Column

I wonder if they will be restoring the Eagle Column as part of the current reconstruction / new construction project?

^ It's not planned yet, but a later reconstruction should be easily possible.

The Palace facade has priority 1 for now.

Yaaaay for Wilhelm von Boddien (in the video)!! Without his 20 years long commitment to the City Palace, nothing would have been possible.
