So you can see, the castle / Humboldtforum increase in two places...

Stuhlemmer Architects bear responsibility for the facade...

If only all buildings today were made with the same level of craftmansship...

It would be an interesting comparison to see how much a building like this costs compared to its contemporary equivalent.

The facade is estimated to cost a mere 90 million Euros. Go ahead to check the financing for a modernist equivalent of this size. It isn't too different actually.

The problem is that few seem to be capable of designing well proportioned and appealing historicist facades. Neo-baroque doesn quite fit many forms of modern buildings either I guess. But this sort of neo-Art deco that is popular in Berlin nowadays is quite fine.

Stunning.. I'm in absolute awe of the skill and craftsmanship that goes into a building like this. Love the updates of the workshop progress.

Great craftsmanship. Once finished, this Palace will be incredible!
Probably it will be as impressive to modern people, as it was to people centuries ago!

Some history...

After demolishing the castle, 58 years ago, same place... The GDR celebrated the day of the working class. Example parade for Nordkorea today.

Compare the cost of the highly complicated PATH terminal by Santiago Calatrava and this ornate structure. I don't think the Stadtschloss will come close to 3.7 billion USD.

And they say building in traditional style is too expensive.

Ornament fabrication / traditional styles might turn way more affordable in the foreseeable future, thanks to 3D printing. We could almost get back to 19th century catalogue levels.

That would surely help a lot of unkempt or lost buildings to turn their grandeur back. And perhaps also some newly created gems we could only dream of by now.

Great parade

Interesting how they kept the Wehrmacht uniforms which were only slightly changed

In my opinion, they should have renewed the Palast der Republik and rebuilt the castle somewhere nearby

Somewhere nearby? Like, in the river Spree?

The world, well the architects/ideologists, would have cried out their "Disney lalalala" chanson even louder. And the PdR commie crap frankly had no place there, right in between the precious Museum Island ensemble, Unter den Linden, the historical Mitte and the Dom.

Sorry for the slight off-topic guys but I figured I'd ask here since its right beside the Schloss: Is the possibility of the Dom getting an extreme make over for the roof remotely possible? Getting back the original Copula and little domes for the side towers would completely change that area along with this remarkable project . I wont be able to die happily until the Dom gets its proper roof back!

Yes? No? Am I dreaming or is this actually possible?

You're not the only one dreaming about the original Dom cupola and turrets.
But as the Evangelical Church in Germany faces somewhat of a dire financial situation they aren't able to do it. It could be done with donations perhaps, but even with many historicism/Wilhelminism admirers out there that might be tough. And tax money for something like that? Hmm, well.

It might happen one day, some time after 2018, when the City Palace is finished.

The current solution is more restrained and not bad either.
But somehow the Wilhelmine grandeur is missing and proportions are a little flawed.

Especially the cross looks somewhat awkward. It could need a rounded copper covering in the lower section.
