Ludi, thank you so much for these new perspectives. It's great to be able to see such details, especially in the area of the dome.

there is one other items of good news from these pics.

The building, in its current form, looks like a communist cement block house. Hopefully the cement block houses that were intended to appear as such can be 'completed' with exterior facings and finishes as the Schloss will have.

That Dome

Personally, I would have deleted the dome from the new building. The building actually looks complete without it and it serves no purpose except to restore what was there before the war. Since they have gotten so creative with the east side of the new building, don't tell me that they couldn't have just skipped adding it to the reconstruction and saved that money.

The dome adds a lot to the cityscape from many perspectives and I think the Schloss wouldn't be the Schloss without it anymore. It'd look like the building obviously lacks something. I don't like the earlier baroque Palace without the dome, and a dome was planned from the beginning anyway (while it wasn't executed due to cost restraints). They even added a huge bell tower later, that sadly collapsed (well, I can also live without that).

Imagine this without the cupola, it just wouldn't seem right, too underwhelming for the city's focal point imho:

I agree with Erbse. To rebuild the Berlin City Palace without its dome would be like rebuilding the Chrysler Building without its distinctive stainless steel crown. What would be the point?

Agreed - the Dome is an integral part of the structure to rebuild the schloss without it would be pointless and it will add great interest to the skyline of that part of the city.

The Dome is the most important part of the new castle. Without it would be only a quarter with stuco.

I was happy about Franco Stellas draft, cause he wanted to reconstruct the original Dome, so I also can accept the east-side-fassad.

Ludi: Castle = Burg, like a medieval fortress (Spandauer Zitadelle or Burg Eltz, for example).

Palace or "schloss" = Schloss, Palast, like the Stadtschloss or Sanssouci. Hope you'll remember it next time.

Ludi doesn't listen anyway, I told him before... :/

By the way... Neil MacGregor, still director of the British Museum, will be the new leading intendant of the Humboldt-Forum! We're very lucky!

Oh my god those helmets! What were they thinking? Poor King George looks so uncomfortable. Great to see the Palace becoming the Humboltd Forum.

Ah well, they were really fashionable at the time.

Look, Bismarck is so delighted to wear a Pickelhaube.

So many followed Prussian's glory back then. Russia, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Venezuela...

eastside facade - sand stone concrete mix?

My hopes for the east façade go in the direction of a truly successful example in Stresemannstrasse . Here two pictures ...

Jürgen Pleuser Architekten have shown by realizing the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety as it can look.

U.S. Copied Germany Too

The U.S. Marines also copied the German spiked helmet in the 1890s.

Head butting could turn messy with a Pickelhaube.

They proposed a similar mixture for the facade at least, so it's not too unlikely it'll look similar, though a little more pale probably.
