Tripods are best, but in the absence of that, try to hold the camera firm against a tree or something and set the shutter on a timer so you don't have to worry about your "trigger finger" moving the camera.

Thank you! This is precisely what I try to capture when I shoot Miami's architecture!

So far, I'm doing quite well without a a tripod and timer set, don't you think? Anyway, Diskojoe, an experienced photographer from Houston who has several photo threads going as well, has already asked me what settings I use and has told me what he uses, but thank you for your advice anyway. When I'm ready to start shooting from the causeways, I'll look into getting a tripod and setting my timer. I just thought Hobie Island might be close enough to get off a good skyline shot the way I captured this shot below from the Port of Miami Bridge.

Thanks, 900! This one below is definitely a perspective I want to improve upon, but haven't been able to, so I'm looking into at least setting my auto-timer so that I don't move the camera too much by finger-snapping the picture.

Is it just me or dont you find Adrienne Arsht Center extremly ugly?

I'd love something more classic for an opera building. Why not in a art deco style?

I was very pleased with how I was able to improve on this shot of Plaza at Brickell, Icon Brickell, and 500 Brickell from across the Miami River in front of One Miami, but the one skyline shot from Hobie Island is the best I can do without a tripod, though I did finally figure out how to set my auto-timer after calling Nikon. None of the others from Hobie Island came out looking quite as good, so I didn't post them.

I will withold any comment. The last time that I complimented someone's photography in this forum the guy snapped. So I won't do that again.

The suggestion was an alternative to the "reclining against a palm tree and holding your breath" method. Without a tripod, pictures will be much less blurry and have more clarity in low light if you hold the camera firmly against a steady object and use the timer.
Hopefully you find this helpful.

Was that October 3rd on page 163 of the Downtown Miami Pictures thread or more recently as your current incarnation?

Here below, you complimented me on November 28, 2010 on page 3 of the Brickell Citicentre thread for some mundane pictures of a sign. Now, have you complimented anyone since then and they snapped on you? As moderator of the Miami forum, I would like to know.

Congratulations on the Tripod! What a difference. See what I mean, with that hold your breath method, you get one out of ten shots that are worth posting. Most of the low light night pictures posted recently are not nearly as good as the recent photos that you have posted without the hold your breath method.

The difference is like night and day...or like delete-able and post-able.

Seriously, I had every intention of getting a tripod at some point, and even though I titled this thread The Best of Miami and the Beaches, I often post for perspective, as I've said almost from the very beginning of shooting and posting. A photo is here because it's what I want you to see, whether it's a perfect picture or not. On this thread, what is post-able or delete-able is what I deem to be so. I've posted enough "awesome" photos not to be concerned with whether somebody thinks I'm a great photographer or not because I post a not-so-great photograph. Now, the only thing I have really asked you about photography is who snapped the last time you complimented somebody's photography in this forum.
