Anyone know if the new Istanbul Airport will receive some sort of rapid transit access into the city centre (like an extension of the Marmaray Line)?

10bln euro İstanbul 3rd airport construction on swamp land
Transport Minister Lütfi Elvan admitted Istanbul’s third airport is being built on a swampland, adding that the largest part of it has been drained and will be improved soon

Minister of Transportation Lütfi Elvan visited on Friday to survey the construction area of third airport in İstanbul. After the survey, it was stated that the world’s largest airport would be constructed on swamp land which needed to be stabilized prior to the next phase of construction. Minister Elvan added for that they're working with world’s prestigious companies.

“The third airport will be the hub of the world. Over 30,000 workers and more than 3,000 construction machines will be employed for the construction of the world’s largest airport," the minister said.

Atatürk airport will continue to serve

Minister of Transportation Lütfi Elvan noted that Atatürk International Airport will be remain as operational. He reported the cost of the third airport may exceed 10 billion euro, as projected by the consortium construction company.

A 25-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract for İstanbul's third airport -- advertised by Ankara as one that may become the world's largest -- secured a 22.1 billion euro ($29 billion) windfall on May after Turkish consortium Limak-Cengiz-Kolin-Mapa-Kalyon OGG beat out three competitors for the deal.

The full amount of money the consortium will pay the state totals 26.14 billion euros with the 18 percent value-added tax (KDV) added to the final bidding amount of 22.1 billion euros.

“Three quarter of airport area is swamp”

Referring to the Union of Geology Engineers statement which criticized the construction saying the base of the airport lay on the “swampland,” minister Elvan said that they were already aware of it.

“They should stop politicizing the issue. Experts are examining the ground. We have all technical possibilities with us. An expert has been conducting the drilling and investigations by the temporary permission of the general directorate of forestry.”

According to Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communications Lütfi Elvan, more than 150 airway companies and airlines will able to use the new airport facilities, and the airport will obtain the required international certificates in terms of environmental awareness.

The third airport garnered wide criticism from environmental groups over news that around 85 percent of the new airport zone will be built on previously protected forest zones.

The new airport will be constructed on İstanbul's European side between the Black Sea regions of Yeniköy and Akpınar.

In January Turkey unveiled its plans to build the airport, which it says could be completed as early as 2017. The Transportation Ministry reported earlier that it projects the airport will be able to handle a capacity of 90 million passengers annually upon opening in 2017, and would gradually “gear up” to the world-record-setting 150 million passenger capacity.

Extension of international terminal

Quote:
TAV will invest €75 m to expand international terminal at Istanbul Atatürk

According to the agreement reached between TAV and DHMI, the international terminal will be expanded. Within this context eight new passenger boarding bridges will be added and the terminal will be expanded 27,000 sqm. With an investment of around 75 million Euros, number of check-in counters, baggage handling capacity and car park capacity will be increased.

TAV Airports, the leading global brand of Turkey in airport operation, signed an agreement with State Airports Authority, DHMI, for an additional investment for renovation and expansion of the international terminal of Istanbul Atatürk Airport. After DHMI put into service the additional 26 aircraft parking area and taxi ways at Atatürk Airport last week, TAV will invest 75 million Euros for the expansion of the international terminal. The works are planned to be completed in 16 months.

TAV Airports President & CEO Sani Şener stated: “Atatürk Airport provides service to a significant part of Turkish air traffic at Atatürk Airport. Last week, the new apron investment of DHMI at the air side was put into service. Additional 26 parking lots will bring significant relief to the parking capacity. The cargo hangar investments of Turkish Airlines, Havaş and Çelebi at the new cargo section have also been completed. We have signed the agreement regarding the investment consisting of the expansion of the international terminal to the former cargo area, early baggage storage facility and third luggage facility to be built for the increasing transit passenger number of Turkish Airlines and addition of a new check-in isle in the main building. The investment amount will be around 75 million Euros. We cannot even think that we do not need investing in Atatürk Airport while institutions such as DHMI, Turkish Airlines, Havaş and Çelebi continue their investments. We always give priority to social benefits as well as financial profitability and interests of the country. TAV is one of the exceptional global brands of Turkey. Atatürk Airport has become one of the most important airports of the world and TAV has a significant share in this achievement besides DHMI, Turkish Airlines and other airline companies. We will continue our investments in the following six years without compromising service quality and passenger comfort."

According to the agreement signed by DHMI and TAV, the number of aircraft boarding bridges will be increased from 26 to 34 at the international terminal. Within the scope of the project, the terminal area will be expanded 27,000 sqm while the car park will be expanded 17,000 sqm. TAV has the right to operate Istanbul Atatürk Airport until 2021. All revenues resulting from the commercial areas and advertisement areas within the additional agreement will belong to TAV during the operation period. The revenues to be gained from new car park will be shared with DHMI.

In the event that DHMI stops operation of Atatürk Airport before the expiry of the concession period, TAV has given the guarantee for compensation for its losses.

Providing service to 51.3 million passengers in 2013, Atatürk Airport has achieved a growth of 11 per cent in the number of passengers during the first ten months of 2014.

Istanbul Atatürk ( +11 % ) and Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen ( +27 % ) have the biggest growth rates of all airports in Europe.

Istanbul Atatürk has overtaken Amsterdam Shiphol ( 2014 ) and with this growth rates it will overtake Frankfurt Airport this year ( 2015 )

Busiest airports in Europe 2014

- Gates 101 to 112 are for domestic flights
- Gates 201 to 226 are for international flights

If all those gates (at either terminal) are filled up, where do those passengers end up boarding and disembarking? And, if an international flight finds itself that all gates (201 to 226) are full, can it be deplaned at the domestic (101 to 112) gates, and vice versa?

Based on the footage this "moron" captured with his Drone, at approximately 8 minutes 05 sec there is a well lit up "new" apron built directly opposite the International Terminal / gates.

No, it is an extension of the current international terminal, west of gate number 226.
