3rd Istanbul airport to have world’s largest duty-free complex

Quote:
German company Heinemann and Turkey’s Unifree have signed a deal to initiate the world’s largest duty-free complex at Istanbul’s under construction third airport.

The agreement for the investment, worth around 120 million euros, was inked by both Heinemann and Unifree, as well as the members of the consortium that will build the airport.

A joint venture consortium of Cengiz-Kolin-Limak-Mapa-Kalyon won the tender for the airport in May 2013 for a 25-year lease, with an offer of 22 billion euros.

The head of the consortium and the chair of Limak Holding, Nihat Özdemir, said the duty-free complex will be the largest in the world.

Heinemann CEO Claus Heinemann said his company had operated in Turkey for the last 30 years, including 15 years at the Atatürk Airport.

“We know Turkey and Turks very well, and Germany and Turkey have very good relations. We bring our international know-how to Istanbul, a regional hub, and we believe in Turkey’s growth potential,” Heinemann added.

“At 53,000 square meters this is a retail space of totally new dimensions. It will enable us to implement unique concepts,” he said.

The company plans to create more than 7,000 jobs at the airport, and investments amounting to more than 120 million euros are projected as part of the duty-free complex.

Istanbul’s third airport will have an initial passenger capacity of 90 million annually. Two expansions are set to follow, raising the annual passenger capacity to 150 million.

The design of the duty-free complex was inspired by the Bosphorus, the consortium members have stated.

Meanwhile, consortium head Nihat Özdemir said they would pour the first concrete for the new airport in March and they had secured a bridging loan worth 750 million euros for the project.

He also added that Limak Holding will secure a 5.5 billion euro loan in a deal with seven banks in May. He said the first cement will be poured in March after the completion of around 3,000 drillings.

Istanbul’s enormous third airport is expected to provide jobs for a total of 100,000 people, and will include a total of six runways, 16 taxiways, 88 passenger bridges, and 165 aircraft passenger bridges across all terminals. It will also include a 6.5 million-square-meter apron with a capacity for 500 aircraft, among other facilities.

Wow, Istanbul is really learning from Dubai and EK! First they are trying to make Istanbul airport a huge transit hub and now they are looking at the ways DXB makes money like the duty free. Well good luck to them!

A Turkish Airlines plane carrying 224 passengers had to be evacuated after it missed the runway on landing at Kathmandu airport on March 4 and skidded onto nearby grassland.

"All passengers and the crew were rescued and transferred to the terminal building. One passenger was slightly injured and transferred to the hospital for treatment," Turkish Airlines said in a statement.

Chudal said the pilot overshot the runway during an initial attempt to land, before making a second try that sent the plane skidding off the tarmac.

"As the plane approached, it somehow missed the runway and ended up in the grassland area," said the airport's general manager Birendra Prasad Shrestha.

The Himalayan nation is home to some of the world's most remote and tricky runways, flanked by snow-capped peaks and terrain that poses a challenge even for accomplished pilots.

A string of crashes as well as the European Union's decision to blacklist all Nepalese airlines prompted government officials last year to announce plans to install new radar and weather monitoring systems which would provide real-time updates.

In the most recent accident last February, a Nepal Airlines plane slammed into a hillside in the country's western region during heavy rain, killing all 18 people on board.

Airbus applies to build logistics base at third Istanbul airport

May 10, 2015
Airbus applies to build logistics base at thirrd Istanbul airport
The third airport to be built in Istanbul, which is expected to change aviation balances not only in Turkey, but the whole region, is already drawing the attention of foreign investors

While it is still under construction, Airbus, a major airplane producer worldwide, has already said that it wants to invest in the new airport. Limak Yatırım Holding CEO Ebru Özdemir visited Toulouse, France as a guest of Airbus together with students of Limak ASI, an aviation training project in Pristina, Kosovo. She both toured the production facilities and held a meeting with executives of the hosting company. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Özdemir said the top managers of Airbus Real Estate Department had requested an area to be reserved for them.

Saying that they made a presentation to Airbus executives about the third airport, Özdemir stated that they are very interested in the project and that the demand for aircraft has switched from the West to the East with all of the 140 orders placed last year being from the Middle East and Far East, excluding orders from the U.K. "They have expressed their desire to build a logistics base in order to perform repairs and maintenance of planes, including spare parts and simulators, and have asked us how we can collaborate. They also informed us that they want to rent a space at the third airport," Özdemir said.

According to Özdemir's speech, they presented an area in the master plan to Airbus and as the first stage they want to rent out an approximately 20,000-square-meter space. She added that this is the first step and with the initiation of the Airbus project, one of the biggest aviation companies will come to Istanbul. She further added that she believes Turkey will become the logistics center of many aviation firms.

She also underlined that while the company has decided to invest in other countries before, things did not go according to plan and, therefore, they started considering Turkey. Özdemir pointed out that the qualified labor force in Turkey had an effect on their decision as they have faced difficulties such as hiring staff with the adequate level of English. She also added that Turkish Airlines' international success is another reason for this decision.

On Limak's energy investments, Özdemir said that they are one of the groups that have completed their vertical integration in the energy sector and are considering founding Limak Enerji Holding by calling their energy group to a meeting. "Our aim is to become one of the third leading companies in Turkey in terms of production and distribution," Özdemir said.

She also underlined that the third airport being built by the Limak-Kolin-Cengiz-Kalyon-Mapa joint venture has a very important strategic location and is ideal for large aviation companies such as Airbus to make Turkey their aviation base.

Özdemir also said that they are interested in the privatization of airports in Europe, mainly the Lyon and Nice airports in France. "Our partner in Lyon is motivating us in this respect and since aviation is an area we are extremely interested in, we believe we can contribute to the European aviation industry," Özdemir said

The 3rd airport that is planned to be built till 2018 will be a big disaster for the nature and make the population increase.

A Turkish columnist "Çiğdem Toker" wrote an article about this. The article is in Turkish but you can translate it via Google Translator:

3. Havalimanı ve Doğmamış Çocuklarımız

CHP milletvekili Aykut Erdoğdu, sosyal medya hesabından dün soruyordu:
“3. havalimanı için yer teslimi yapıldı mı? Yapılmadıysa hangi hakla bölgeyi kapatıp işe başladılar?”

Terminal construction starts in Istanbul’s third airport

Construction of the terminal building of Istanbul's third airport has started, Turkey's General Directorate of State Airports Authority head Serdar Hüseyin Yıldırım said late Friday in a meeting with journalists in Istanbul.

General Director Yıldırım dismissed the allegations that construction of the third airport is halted, and stated that only urgent expropriation decision for the lands falling into east-west axis landing strip has been overruled by Turkey's top administrative court Council of State.

Yıldırım noted that through the decision of the Council of State, a perception campaign has been launched in the media as if the whole project was halted.

The first plane will land in the first quarter of 2018, Yıldırım said, and construction works are currently ongoing in in line with with the schedule.

When all phases are completed, Istanbul's third airport will be the world's largest airport with an annual capacity of 150 million passengers.

Yıldırım dismissed the allegations that newly-inaugurated Ordu-Giresun Airport lacks necessary equipment that enables landing in rough weather conditions, adding that as the airport was built in reclaimed land in Black Sea, it is subject to heavy fog that disables visibility of the landing strip from time to time. A total of 27,071 passengers used the airport in May and June and this number will increase to 160,000 by the end of the year, Yıldırım said.

Yıldırım added that 140,000 passengers are expected to use Hakkari Yüksekova Airport which opened to service in May, and 10,783 passengers have used the airport so far

Destruction of 76 square kilometres of forests, lakes and farmland is proceeding north of Istanbul for the city's third airport, writes Rosie Bridger. But the gigantic ‘aerotropolis' project is vigorously opposed by local farmers and residents, and an urban resistance fighting other ecologically destructive megaprojects across the beautiful, biodiverse region - both on the streets and in the courts.

The masterplan is a blueprint for an airport of gargantuan proportions, a megahub with six runways and 16 taxiways. The site, alongside the Black Sea coast 50 kilometres to the north of the city, is gigantic: 7,650 hectares (one hectare is about the size of a football pitch).

The airport project is supported by government at the highest levels, including Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On 11th February 2014, as commencement of construction loomed, an Istanbul court suspended environmental approval for the airport, ordering a stay of execution, in response to a lawsuit filed by residents living in districts neighbouring the site.

But national government officials, determined to bulldoze the project through the legislature, pledged that works to prepare the site for construction would continue.

Algerian passenger breaks door, runs after plane at İstanbul Atatürk Airport

An Algerian passenger at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport broke the glass door of a passenger boarding bridge and began to run after a taxiing plane after he fell asleep in a waiting room.

Chiha Djallal, 29, had checked in for a Turkish Airlines plane bound for the Algerian city of Batna. After he completed his passport check process, he fell asleep in the waiting room and did not hear announcements that the flight was boarding. When he woke up, he realized the waiting room was empty and his plane was taxiing down the runway. In a panic, Djallal broke the glass door of the passenger boarding bridge and jumped to the ramp after forcing open the blinds of the bridge.

The ramp personnel caught Djallal as he was trying to run after the taxiing plane. He was then handed over to the airport police.

Djallal said he had run after the plane because his family was waiting for him in Algeria and he had to go, and thus he had panicked.

Singapore Airlines plane makes emergency landing in İstanbul

The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-200 took off from Istanbul Atatürk Airport at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 17, with 255 passengers and 14 crew members aboard.

The plane ran into a flock of storks while gaining altitude, damaging its radome, a weatherproof protective shield for its radar antenna.

The collision also inflicted damage on various other parts of the plane, including an engine on its left-hand side.

An hour and ten minutes after taking off, the plane made an emergency landing in Istanbul at 2:40 p.m.

The passengers were transferred to a hotel while Singapore Airlines reportedly arranged to bring another plane to Istanbul.

Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines technical teams took the damaged Boeing to maintenance.
