Wow nice videos, there has been much progress on the construction site. This airport will probably figure among top 10 hubs of the world. I've been trying to locate it on Google Earth, but I couldn't find the exactly site, perhaps because there are no new satellite images taken lately.

BTW it seems like Istanbul is passing through a gigantic infrastructure boom. There are a lot of news expressways everywhere, new and massive airport, third bridge and so on

Boeing to provide TAAM solution to support Istanbul Airport construction project

Boeing has entered a new technical assistance agreement with iGA Havalimani Isletmesi (IGA), the developer and operator of Istanbul New Airport in Turkey. Under the deal, Boeing's American subsidiary Jeppesen will be responsible for providing Total Airport and Airspace Modeller (TAAM) solution in order to support IGA and General Directorate of State Airports Authority of Turkey (DHMI).

The group will help develop Istanbul New Airport's airspace design, the airport operation optimisation programme and an operational readiness plan.Boeing Turkey managing director Aysem Sargin said: "We look forward to working with IGA and DHMI to find the most effective operational concepts for the Istanbul area, as part of the overall investment in the infrastructure of Turkish aerospace.

"Using our TAAM tool, we will be able to show the impacts of all operational concepts and assist the Istanbul New Airport team to make the most informed decisions possible for the new airport."

The latest TAAM analysis tool provided by Jeppesen will be used with the IGA and DHMI teams in order to conduct studies with an aim to optimise runway operations, as well as the overall airspace capacity and efficiency at Istanbul New Airport.

The project also includes the responsibility of IGA to maintain safety, as well as minimise airspace conflict within the regional Istanbul Terminal Control Area. IGA and DHMI will be trained to use the TAAM solution, enabling their active participation in the project. They will also be able to carry out their own continuing analysis projects after the successful delivery of Jeppesen's report.

Worth noting too that the final parts of the Northern Marmara motorway, a northern megabypass around Istanbul which will pass the new airport complex, have finished tendering and should go to construction in the coming months.

I assume that an airport 'link' to this motorway will also go to construction, it will not be a very long road segment.

It would be somewhat pointless to open the new airport before the road network to connect it with the rest of Turkey is completed. The new road network will also ensure that a high speed/frequency bus shuttle to/from Sabiha Gocken airport can be inaugrated along with the new airport.

Okay, I just heard of this. Please make sure that we handle this issue as sensitively as professionally as possible. From multiple sources:

Attack at Istanbul Airport Leaves More Than 20 Dead (New York Times)
Quote:
Several attackers blew themselves up at Turkey’s largest airport after a confrontation with the police on Tuesday night, according to Turkish authorities and television reports.

At least 28 people were killed and 60 more were injured in the attack by three suicide bombers on the Ataturk airport in Istanbul, the governor of Istanbul, Vasip Sahin, told Turkish news media outlets.

Earlier, the justice minister, Bekir Bozdag, said that one of the attackers had fired an automatic weapon before detonating explosives.

Another Turkish government official said that the police fired shots at two suspected attackers at the entryway to the airport’s international terminal, in an effort to stop them before they reached the building’s security checkpoint. The two suspects then blew themselves up, the official said.
Istanbul airport explosions: 28 dead, 60 injured, Turkish official says (CNN)
Quote:
At least 28 people have been killed and 60 others wounded in a terror attack on Istanbul Ataturk Airport in Turkey, Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin told Turkey's state-run news agency TRT. Three bombers were also killed, the governor said. Another report, from semi-official news agency Anadolu, said six of the wounded are in critical condition. A total of 49 ambulances were sent to the site.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility.

Traveler Joe Durand told CNN from the airport that "Police are not letting anyone in ... Hundreds of people are flooding away from airport... People are trying to get away. They're not saying much -- just the look on their face is enough, shock, some of them bleeding..."

"People are walking away bleeding, with bandages on their head."

As Flightradar mentioned, many flights diverted to İzmir A. Menderes, Ankara Esenboğa and İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen respectively.

I also heard from BBC and Euronews that the planes landed during the event are waiting in the apron with passengers.

Additionally airport is still active; many planes delayed though: http://www.dhmi.gov.tr/flightinformation.aspx

BREAKING NEWS: Atatürk Airport is closed until 8 PM (GMT+2).

Oh wow. Can SAW actually handle widebodies like the 77W or A343? That airport handles mostly narrow bodies like the B737 and A320...

Airport opened at 5 am (GMT+2) with long flights; Taipei, Manila, Seoul planes landed.

In addition a Turkish Airlines plane landed to Çorlu, Tekirdağ (TEQ) last night, passengers transferred to İstanbul by bus.

The first victimized route since the airport attack seems to become reality:
http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/...ate-july-2016/

It is a flight from China by China Southern Airlines. I think though that this is also being caused by earlier attacks in Turkey which already detoriated tourist demand. It only involves the city of Urumqi.

Probably a political decision by the Chinese not a commercial loss.

EDIT: I wrote some infos but the link to airlive.net already said everything.

I was monitoring Flightradar for curiosity... to land in Sofia after 5 hours of flight shouldn't be a pleasant experience, but maybe better than landing in the middle of a coup...
