Worth noting that the coup was over once Erdogan eventually flew into IST late last night and gave a press conference there.

What a wacky world we live in where you can watch a possible coup on TV where modern media plays a big role today.

In the meantime, FAA lifts embargo on US-Turkey flights

Quote:
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has rescinded, with immediate effect, a Notice To Airmen (NOTAM) issued this past weekend that barred all airlines from carrying out flights between the United States and Turkey until September 1.

The decree would have severely affected Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Atatürk) had it been fully enforced.

The new airport hits 30% completion from a May 2015 start point and may be completed and tested in late 2018 now. Here is Terminal 1 at present.

This one is not busy enough to warrant an extra thread.

Turkey pushes button to build subway line to third Istanbul airport

Quote:
September/13/2016
Turkish authorities have said they started work on a plan for the construction of a new subway line to Istanbul’s third airport, the first section of which is planned to open by the beginning of 2018.

“Our ministry has applied to the Development Ministry for the inclusion of the preparation works for a new rail system between the central Istanbul district of Gayrettepe and the new airport into the 2016 State Investment Plan in a bid to complete the line by the first quarter of 2018, the planned opening date for the airport. As soon as this ministry issues a high planning board decision for our application, we will start the bid process for the new subway line,” said Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ahmet Arslan.

The first section of the new airport is planned to open in early 2018 and offer services to 90 million passengers.

A new 65-km-long subway line will be built from central Istanbul to the airport. The first Gayrettepe line will be 34 km long and be completed with another line, the 31-km-long Halkalı line.

The subway line, starting from Gayrettepe, will take around 26 minutes from one end to the other.

Gayrettepe, where the existing subway, metrobus and bus lines currently meet, will be the main transfer point for both the Asian and European sides, according to officials.

There is currently no sea or subway transportation to the airport site from the city center.

The construction of the subway line was undertaken by the ministry in line with a cabinet decision, which was published in the Official Gazette on Sept. 1.

It is more likely that the new airport will open in 2019 or even 2020. Internally that terminal will be one of the most complex buildings in Europe if not THE most complex and integrating and testing all the systems will take quite some time.

I expect the terminal shell will be externally complete by early 2018...but internally.????

Barajas T4 took 7 years to complete. If IST opens in mid 2019 it will have taken 5 years ....from scratch.

Construction starts on control tower of Istanbul’s third airport

October 27, 2016

Quote:
The construction of the air traffic control tower of Istanbul's future third airport began with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday.

The Transport, Maritime and Communications Minister Ahmet Arslan attended to the ceremony.

Arslan noted that the tower will have a key role in managing the air traffic of Asia, Africa, Middle East, Balkans, Caucasus and Europe as well as Turkey.

The 95-meter-long tower will cost around 50 million Turkish liras ($16 million), and makes up only a tiny part of the TL 35 billion ($11.2 billion) worth project.

Minister Arslan said that the tower had competed with 370 other projects and was awarded the prize when it was still on paper.

Noting that Atatürk International Airport currently serves 1,300 planes a day on average with some days exceeding 1,450 landings and take-offs across two runway, Arslan said that two runways of the third airport's first phase will be able to serve 2,000 planes per day on average. He added that the construction of the first runway was nearly finished.

Arslan said that 20,000 people are currently being employed on the project, and this will surpass 30,000 next year.

Pininfarina and Aekom's innovative tulip-inspired design was announced on Dec.24 as the winner of the international design competition for the airport traffic control tower of Istanbul's third airport.

The AECOM and Pininfarina design is an elliptical tower that harnesses aerodynamics. The design combines speed, modernity and romanticism, while its tulip-inspired shape is a beautiful reference to the centuries-old Turkish tradition, which is associated with the tulip flower.

Initiated by the IGA (Istanbul Grand Airport), the contest saw many world-renowned designers from both aviation and automotive sectors compete. The tulip-inspired design was chosen from a total of six entries from international architectural teams such as Zaha Hadid, Moshe Safdie, Fuksas, Grimshaw-Nordic and RMJM.

The new airport is currently being built on the European side of Istanbul and the construction is expected to be completed by 2018. It will have an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year, but with extensions it will be able to host 200 million.

The IGA consortium, which won a tender held in May 2013 to build Istanbul's new airport, is comprised of five leading Turkish construction companies - Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin and Kalyon.

In October, IGA made an agreement with Turkey's state-owned Halkbank, Ziraat Bankası and VakıfBank as well as foreign-financed banks DenizBank, Garanti Bankası and Finansbank for a €4.5 billion loan for the first phase of the aviation project

Istanbul New Airport wins coveted award before opening

Monday, 21 November 2016

Istanbul New Airport or Third Airport, which is currently under construction, has won a coveted award before opening. The airport is planned as the largest airport in the world, with a 150 million passenger annual capacity.

It will be the third international airport to be built in Istanbul after Istanbul Atatürk Airport and Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.

The new airport has received a design award at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin.

The award for Infrastructure – Future Projects went to lead designer Scott Brownrigg and original designers Grimshaw, Nordic and Haptic. Architects Fonksiyon and TAM/Kiklop were also honored for their work on the project.

“The terminal building will have the feature of being the biggest terminal under one roof in the world,” Transport Minister Ahmet Arslan said.

The airport will host 2,000 flights a day and more than 100 million passengers annually via 250 airlines when the first phase of construction is completed in early 2018.

Also receiving an award at the festival held on Thursday and Friday was the Beyazit state library in Istanbul, which houses more than a million works. Tabanlioglu Architects received the award in the New and Old – Completed Building category.
