Istanbul New Airport to create thousands of new jobs

According to the recently published Istanbul New Airport Economic Impact Analysis, the airport could provide employment to up to 225,000 people by 2025.

With an estimated investment of 10.25 billion euros, Istanbul New Airport is not only the largest infrastructure project in Turkey’s history, it will also be a huge job creator.

The figures are part of a study which was prepared by Istanbul Economics, an independent research and consultancy company, and think tank EDAM (Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies), both based in Istanbul. Employment will come in fields like ground services, airlines, security, maintenance and repair, and food and beverage.

More jobs and economic growth are just some of the effects of the new airport. The researchers stress that the international hub will foster direct investments and innovations.

“There is a proven relationship between airline connections and the capacity of countries in attracting foreign direct investment,” they state. High-technology production and knowledge-intensive services are attracted by strong airline connections. Innovation centres and science parks will arise around the airport. Access to medium- and long-distance flights also contributes to the growth of high-technology employment.

Istanbul will be one of the main beneficiaries of the airport, whose first phase is planned to be activated in the first quarter of 2018. It will have 2,000 flights a day and host 90 million passengers per year.

Daily 3,500 flights and a capacity of 200 million passengers are planned for the long run.

Airport City, with its hotels, office buildings, and health-care centres, forms the new business centre of the city. Istanbul will develop further on an east-west axis, which will help ease the pressures of migration. Investments in infrastructure projects like the Third Bosporus Bridge and in new train and public transport services to the hinterland bring the city closer together and help develop the area around the airport where urban development is relatively weak.

Thus, the airport will enhance Istanbul’s role as a bridge and one of the most important centres between East and West, underlining the city’s tradition as a cosmopolitan, open-minded metropolis.

Moreover, as the analysis points out, it will contribute to Turkey’s integration into the world, since the aviation sector in Turkey is leading other sectors on the subjects of openness to competition and integration with the global economy.

It won't be a huge job creator. It will be the same people working as in Ataturk now and IST traffic is dropping overall and Turkish have grounded some planes all winter.

and the current feud with my country will not be to the benefit of these jobs. If RTE decides to close airspace for Dutch airlines, the opposite will happen from here as well, and as Europe is looking nervous at the same time while America has Gulen and Trump, then obviously, traffic is going down. Except for a few monoethnic inbound flights. At least, don't expect huge numbers of (efficient) employment as long as the RTE regime (combined with an evet outcome in april) will be there.

For now they are building the main terminal (90m capacity) and 1 runway only.

I assume a second runway and even maybe a third runway will be built starting soon and I cannot see the 2/3 runways and the terminal opening before 2019. The terminal is not even roofed yet, never mind weather tight.

It is planned to have possibly another 3 runways and extra smaller terminals in future.

The Sabiha Gökçen Airport, located on the Asian side of İstanbul, hosted a total of 3.2 million passengers last month, according to a statement from the airport’s operation company.

The number of passengers using the airport saw a 13 percent increase with 3.2 million passengers in July compared to the figures in the last year over the same period, which was 2.6 million, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport Investment Development and Operation Inc. (ISG) said in a statement on Aug. 8.

It added that the number of domestic flight passengers hit 2 million in July with a 12 percent increase, while one million international flight passengers used the airport last month, seeing a 15 percent increase.

In addition, the airport also hosted a total of 17.4 million passengers in the first seven months of the year, according to the statement.

This marked a four percent increase from the last year’s figures.

Construction of Istanbul’s third airport continues

8 September 2017

Quote:
By Trend

Construction of Istanbul’s third airport has been completed by more than 60 percent, the Turkish media reported on September 8.

Currently, the construction of the first runway, the length of which is 3.7 kilometers, and the width is 60 meters, continues. According to the project, the second runway will be 4.1 kilometers long, and 60 meters wide.

“Currently, construction and assembling work is underway on the construction of 28 bridges and a hydrometeorological tower at the airport. More than 31,000 employees are involved in the construction work,” the reports say.

About 300 passenger and baggage elevators will be installed at Istanbul’s third airport. The first part of the airport will be commissioned in late October 2018.

Earlier, the air transport department of Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend that the construction of the airport will cost 10 billion Turkish liras.

The third airport is being built near the Lake Terkos in northern Istanbul.

Initially, the airport will serve 90 million passengers per year, and further, this figure will increase to 150 million.

Currently, 55 airports operate in Turkey.

To the contrary, I predict the first phase (1 main terminal and 2 runways) to be completed by June 2018, well ahead of the October 2018 deadline.

Btw, terminal roof jobs would be the second last tasks before final fittings. The key components of airport terminal such as the baggage system is already installed and undergoing test run.

There is NO WAY that the airport will be ready in June 2018. Q4 2019 is far more likely. The bloody roof is not on yet.

You cannot test a terminal...in the rain...with no roof.

The key components of Istanbul's new airport terminal particularly the baggage system is already installed and undergoing test run. See photo: http://wowturkey.com/t.php?p=/tr776/...r_IMG_0440.jpg

Istanbul's new airport terminal is a multi-storey structure. Hence without the bloody roof only the top floor is exposed to rain or snow.

I still cannot see an opening in 2018....they also have to build a new rail line and connect the airport to the North Ring Motorway which is nowhere near finished.

Finishing that lot and the terminal is impossible in 2018 IMO...never mind transferring Ataturk traffic/staff and shutting it.

check the construction site on google maps and you will see, an opening in 2018 is not that impossible as you think.
even the highways aren't so far away from being completed.

The construction pace of Istanbul new airport (world's largest terminal) is simply breathtaking. Within only 24 MONTHS...
