Minister of Transport said it yesterday.
http://zaman.com.tr/haber.do?haberno...hizmet-verecek

Currently no renders.

-all 5 runways can be used at the same time
-first part (terminal) will be ready within 3 yearss (so the airport can be used in 3 years)
-Atatürk Airport's capacity is 18-20 Mil passengers, but last year passenger traffic was 38 Mil.
-Its not possible to expand Atatürk airport. Would cost 5 Bil USD

The location of the new airport is currently a secret, but according to rumours it will be in the north of the european part. BTW 3rd Bosphorus Bridge will be also in the north.

North = far away from the city centre right? I am a bit afraid about the public transport system.. Do you know if there are any plans ?

It can't be that hard to guess the location? A 150 million capacity airport with 5 runways need 30 to 40 square km of undeveloped land. How many places can really be suitable with no urban areas, mountains or lakes?

They say its Kemerburgaz region (forest), but the exact location is unlcear.

Actually the first idea was Silivri (south~ 50km away from the Bosphorus)

Bosphorus is too small, windy and wouldn't be allowed

Sabiha Gökcesne capacity is 25 Mil passengers, but its possible to expand

They want to do both right. To expand Sabiha Gokcen and build a new 150 mil.

Sorry but the opinion I share with myself is that this thirth airport is unnecessary for now and for a long time.
Certainly, Ataturk Airport has reached its limits but there is another airport with a huge potentiaL: SAW (Sabiha Gokcen Airport).
Ataturk Airport will continue to be the Istanbul "prestigious" gateaway, but the future of the massive air traffic developpment CAN be SAW.
There's no need to another one.

Watch the Paris'CDG model development and you will understand that SAW is still early in its history. Everyone who knows Istanbul can understand it...
...But pressure from builders and concrete manufacturers -with the very interested support of politicians- could convince people to build ice factories in Greenland.

A rational development policy of SAW including its integration into the megalopolis by public transportation (urban rails firts of all) is the priority.

The render and the small pictures above looks the same. Maybe it's a proposal ?

I don't think so, I think it's just a render to give a impression but we don't know yet.

Rather than build new airport...should consider expand Ataturk Airport to 4 runways and 120mn passenger capacity terminal (but Yesilkoy neighborhood would have to go)

Nothing controversial about bulldosing neighborhoods to build new runways....
