ISTANBUL'S ATATURK AIRPORT TOPS EUROPEAN TRAFFIC RECORD

ANKARA — Istanbul Ataturk Airport broke air traffic record of all time in Europe with 1,267 landings and takeoffs on Thursday, May 1st, Turkey's airports management agency said.

The agency said Ataturk Airport, which led with the highest numbers of passengers in Europe in August of last year, now breaks a new record in air traffic.

While a new record was broken on April 25 this year with 1,246 planes landing and taking off in 24 hours, the May 1st surpassed this record with a total of 1,267 airplanes, 632 landing and 635 taking off from Ataturk Airport.

Turkey's Transport Ministry said in January that Turkish civil aviation broke a record with over 150 million passengers in 2013, an increase of 14.6 percent compared with 2012.

There was 17.6 percent increase in domestic flights in 2013 and the number of passengers reached 76.1 million. International passengers numbers reached 73.3 million with a rise of 11.8 percent.

Among the busiest airports in Turkey, Istanbul's Ataturk Airport remains in top spot with 17.2 million domestic flight passengers. Sabiha Gokcen Airport, Istanbul's main air hub on the Asian side of the city, is second with 11.9 million domestic flight passengers, while Esenboga Airport in capital Ankara is the third busiest with 9.3 million domestic flight passengers.

In the last 10 years, Turkey has experienced more than a 20 percent annual increase in both aircraft and passenger traffic and in 2012, the commercial aircraft traffic of Ataturk Airport increased 14.8 percent compared to 2011.

According to 2010 forecasts by Turkey's Middle East Technical University's, in 20 years Istanbul airports' commercial aircraft traffic will exceed 1 million aircraft and will host 118 million passengers per year. Cargo traffic will reach 2.5 million if the infrastructure is available.

CONSTRUCTION OF ISTANBUL'S THIRD AIRPORT TO BEGIN IN JUNE

ISTANBUL ó Ground will be broken within a month, as work begins on Istanbul's third airport. The location of the airport was determined after an agreement between Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA), the company that got the tender, and the Turkish State Airports Authority, with the transport hub being placed between YenikŲy and Akpınar.

The new airport will have a capacity of 150 million passengers per year, which will make it the fifth largest airport in the world.

The airport is estimated to cost around 26 billion euros (TL74.5 billion). There will be six runways in the airport, and construction will be completed in three stages. The first stage is expected to come into service within 42 months at the latest. In the first stage, two independent parallel runways, one cross-runway, three parallel taxiways, high speed and connection taxiways, an apron, a terminal building, air traffic-communication- meteorology systems, other service buildings and systems will be built. In the second stage, one independent runway and one taxiway will be built in the neighborhood of Akpınar, while one independent runway, one cross-runway and two parallel taxiways will be completed in the third stage in the neighborhood of Tayakadın-YenikŲy.

The first stage will provide 80,000 people with jobs during the construction process, and when the airport is put into service, 120,000 people will be employed on average annually. It will be the fifth largest airport in the world after King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia and three U.S. airports. The new airport is set to open in June 2017.

The airport will be built on a 76.5 million-meter-square-field between YenikŲy and Akpınar on the European side of Istanbul. This field was chosen by considering ecological balance, wind data and the natural and artificial obstacles of the region. Transportation vehicles, including road and rail transportation to connect the airport with the city center, will be built simultaneously with construction of the airport. Minister of Finance Mehmet Şimsek evaluated the third Istanbul airport project on Wednesday and said: "As far as I follow from the press, the foundations will be laid in June. If so, this means that the problems on the bridge issue are solved. The third airport is indispensable for Turkey." Noting that the number of international passengers reached 73.3 million, an increase of 11.8 percent in 2013. Şimsek said Ataturk Airport is working over capacity and added, "The third airport will take the load off Ataturk Airport's shoulders." Istanbul's Ataturk Airport remains in the top spot among the busiest airports in Turkey with 17.2 million domestic flight passengers, Esenboga Airport in the capital Ankara is the third busiest with 9.3 million domestic flight

Lakes flowed to Black Sea for third Istanbul airport construction

Works to drain off some 70 lakes in northern Istanbul have begun as part of preparations for the construction of the city’s third airport, which has been severely criticized for its potential environmental impact.

The water of the lakes has started to flow into the Black Sea via canals.

According to the Environmental Impact Assessment («ED) submitted for the project, the water holes should be removed from the area where the construction is set to start in June.

Locals living nearby villages have reacted to the works, asking authorities to prevent such a waste by dumping water into the sea while the city is facing an expected water shortage.

Hydrogeology Professor Murat ÷zler said some of the lakes in the area were formed after rain water filled holes created due to coal mines and stone pits, stressing that the re-use of water depends on its quality.

Lake waters that appeared to be clean in analysis could be transferred to Terkos Lake, he said, adding that water collected in stone pit holes could be recycled more easily because its quality is better than water in coal mine holes.

A maximum of 5 percent of Istanbul’s water need can be met by the large lakes in the area, ÷zler said.
Meanwhile, the Istanbul Waterworks Authority (İSKİ) said the water in the lakes was not sufficient for use as drinking water.

Lake ? More like old mines filled with rainwater.

Anyway, 2 days ago:

Turkey has begun construction of the third airport in Istanbul, which it aims to rival Dubai’s new Al Maktoum International as one of the largest in the world.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday laid the first stone for the $30bn project expected to open on October 29, 2017.

"Istanbul is marking a historic day. Turkey is marking a historic day. The biggest airport of the world and six continents is going to rise here," Erdogan said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday.

"We are building not just an airport, but actually a monument of victory today.”

The airport is projected to handle an initial 90mn passengers a year, rising to 150mn when it becomes fully operational in 2018. There was a 20% increase in international passenger numbers at Istanbul’s existing airports last year.

It will be connected via HSR/metro/highway.
Also, the city is continuously expanding.

How long is it to travel from downtown to the new airport site at the moment?

The distance is 35 kms., so you do the math. Probably half an hour, in normal conditions.
But depending on traffic, could also be 1 h. or more.
By rail, it should be less, but in order to be efficient, tenders should start as soon as possible.
Also travel time according to number and density of stations.

I doubt it's a LCC Terminal unless of course the airlines are prepared to pay for a aerobridge operator, I'd say T2?
