Eye care foundation

Quote:
The Koothattukulam-based Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre has started a foundation for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa and diabetic retinopathy patients.

“A clinical research and survey conducted by the research and development section of Sreedhareeyam has found out that these are the most dangerous of eye diseases that can lead patients to blindness, if not treated in time. Even in advanced countries, modern medical science is still on the budding stage in finding efficient treatment for these,” N.P.P. Namboodiri, chief physician of Sreedhareeyam, said.

The hospital was using traditional Ayurvedic principles. In the last 10 years, more than 2 lakh patients had been treated for retinitis pigmentosa and diabetic retinopathy, he said.

Renal and ophthalmology block of the Medical trust Hospital inaugurated
Quote:

The laws governing organ transplant would be modified for the benefit of patients, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating the renal and ophthalmology block of the Medical trust Hospital here on Monday.

Matter of concern

Though some regulations need to be there to govern organ transplant, red-tapism cannot be allowed to take its toll.

The rising cost for medical treatment has become a matter of concern in Kerala. The State government is committed to ensure good medical treatment to all sections of the society. A project for making medical treatment available at affordable rates is being worked out with the support of hospitals and insurance companies, he said.

Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany presided. Excise Minister K. Babu, P. Rajeev, MP, Hibi Eden and Benny Behannan, MLAs, and P.V. Antony, Managing Director of Medical Trust Hospital and P.V Louis, medical director of the hospital, spoke.

Technology knows no boundaries, says minister

Surgeons and surgeries are part of any medical system irrespective of region, economy or rural-urban divide. So, the latest technology and knowledge on surgeries should cross all boundaries, said excise and fisheries minister K Babu.

Speaking at the inauguration of ASICON 2011, the 71st annual conference of the Association of Surgeons of India, in Kochi on Tuesday, he said the theme of the meet, 'Surgeries Sans Frontiers', was apt as at present technology was crossing all borders, economic and political.

He said the conference should be a platform where the best of surgeons meet to explore new possibilities, share knowledge, and build a network of experts to reach out to communities across the country.

The conference was presided over by Dr B K Sinha, president, ASI. A directory of ASI members was released at the function. Among others who spoke on the occasion were Prof Rama Kant, Dr N K Pande, Dr C G Raghu and Dr Santosh John Abraham.

More than 6000 surgeons from across the country are participating in the three-day conference which will conclude on December 30.

Edappally school to get physiotherapy centre
Quote:
It is good news for the differently-abled children from the Ernakulam sub-district. The Government UP School at Edappally is soon to get a full-fledged physiotherapy centre for children with special needs. The funds for the building will be allocated from the local funds of MLA Benny Behanan. The physiotherapy centre is a part of the Central government’s Inclusive Education for Disabled Children (IEDC) programme which looks at integrating differently-abled children in normal schools.
Under the IEDC programme, children identified with various kinds of disability are selected and given physiotherapy sessions twice a week. “There are three kinds of differently-abled students who get treatment here. First, there are those who are disabled but are still in school, secondly, there are the home-based students and thirdly, the ones who are out of school owing to temporary illness or other related reasons.
Though the physiotherapy treatment under the IEDC programme was inaugurated at Edappally in July this year, due to the absence of a building for the purpose, the equipment were kept in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) building.
“As of now the facility is functioning out of the SSA building. This is a common building meant for training of the SSA staff, meetings, camps and all other related programmes of the SSA. It is not always possible to have a building for physiotherapy. This is often becomes a problem as most disabled patients need continuous treatment”, said Thomas, Edappally BPO. One of the reasons for the delay in procuring the funds was that there are no funds under the SSA for a new building for physiotherapy.
“We had sent applications to several to centres including the Primary Health Centre at Edappally, the District Medical Office and so on,” said the BPO.

6-year-old undergoes complex facial surgery

Quote:
In the span of a week, young Abhayakumar had a taste of hell and heaven. The six-year-old had little idea of things to come when he boarded an autorickshaw to see his aunt off at the Chengannur railway station on December 20 afternoon.

In a flash, everything changed for him as a speeding car collided with the autorickshaw in which the boy was travelling along with his uncle and aunt. The boy lost part of his face in the accident and was brought to Specialist Hospital here by night.

“Policemen retrieved the damaged portion of the boy's face from the accident site and sent it in another ambulance by the time he was brought here,”

“The severed portion had all the bones and flesh intact, but was highly contaminated. Another daunting task was that blood vessels were so small that chances of success were less,” said Dr. R. Jayakumar, head of the Department of Plastic and Micro-vascular Surgery, who headed the surgery.

Dr. Jayakumar, who addressed the press meet to announce the success of the surgery on Thursday at the hospital, along with Dr. K.R. Rajappan, director of the hospital, said that no available literature showed that successful execution of composite facial graft, that too involving only a portion of the face, was done in the country till date.

“The critical issue is proper preservation of the severed body organ and bringing it over on time. In this case, the body portion was properly packed and refrigerated. It is always advisable to bring in severed body organs to the hospital within six hours,” said Dr. Rajappan.

New MRI scan centre at General Hospital

Quote:
A new regional MRI scan centre will come up at the General Hospital here.

P. Rajeev, MP, said here on Monday that Rs. 1.5 crore had been allotted from his MP fund for the project. The proposed MRI centre will be modelled on the Regional Dialysis Centre functioning at Aluva, he said.

Mr. Rajeev said the scan centre will be supported by the Cochin Shipyard. He said that the aim of the centre is to offer the MRI scan at Rs. 1,500. He said that private scan centres charge between Rs. 6,000 and Rs. 10,000 for an MRI scan.

The MP said that the proposed centre at the General Hospital will be fully under government control. A managing committee comprising the MP as chairman, and District Collector as working committee chairman, will monitor the activities of the centre. Mr. Rajeev said that he had sought the support of the government for the successful implementation of the project that would benefit the public. Eight new dialysis units will be set up in the second phase of the Regional Dialysis Centre at Aluva.
