Fortis Healthcare (India) on Monday announced the launch of four hospitals, including a cardiac care unit that will be operational by 2013, as part of its plans to strengthen its nationwide presence.

Besides setting up new hospitals at Kochi, Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh) and Bangalore, Fortis Healthcare will manage the cardiac care unit at HLG hospital in Asansol, West Bengal, Fortis Healthcare (India) said in a statement.

Commenting on the development Fortis Healthcare (India) Chief Executive Officer Aditya Vij said: "These new hospitals across the country conform to our plan for strengthening the Fortis network in India."

With the launch of new hospitals, the company's bed strength will go up to 10,270 beds, it said.

While the company's 45-bed hospital at Kochi would offer healthcare for women under the 'Fortis La Femme' brand, its hospital at Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh would cater to Kullu-Manali-Mandi belt, it added.

Expanding its reach to West Bengal, Fortis would operate and manage a 50-bed cardiac care unit at multi-speciality HLG hospital in Asansol, it said.

The company also announced the launch of a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore, which will commence operations by 2013, the company said.

The first de-addiction centre set up by the government in the state will start functioning at the Kochi Co-operative Medical College from Wednesday.

The centre would be a joint programme of the Medical College and the Excise Department and would also be the first such centre that has tertiary care facility. K Babu, minister for excise, will inaugurate the centre at the College in a function on Wednesday at 4 pm.

V K Ibrahim Kunju, minister for public works, will preside over the programme. Eldose Kunhapilly, president, district panchayat, will deliver the keynote address and Jamal Manakadan will inaugurate the Family Counseling Centre.

The excise department has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh of the proposed budget of Rs 30 lakh for the centre.

The College provides the basic infrastructure for OP and has arranged IP facilty for 20 beds in the unit with a possible expansion to accommodate at least 10 more beds.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, Mohan P Sam, medical director of the college, said that the de-addiction centre would be taking up extension programmes in the community soon.

It would also organize medical screening activities to detect learning disabilities among students.

"A team from Birmingham Mental Health Trust in UK would be arriving at the College in November to conduct joint studies in various fields", he said. "The College would act as a major centre to treat patients who develop complications in the de-addiction programme. The excise team that goes for inspection at various centres would be referring cases to the College", said Sam.

K Mohan, deputy commissioner of excise, and T Jaysurya, resident medical officer, also spoke at the press meet.

The bystanders of the patients in the Co-operative Medical College (CMC), Kochi will not have to run helter-skelter seeking various services like that of banks. The authorities of CMC have decided to construct a commercial complex which will house bank, ATM , post office, department store and dormitory for the bystanders.

The high level committee for the development of the CMC held the other day had given sanction to the project. There are also plans to construct a pay ward and staff quarters. According to the Medical Council of India norms, there should be staff quarters attached to the medical college, said Dr Mohan G Sam, director, CMC.

“Lack of staff quarters is a major shortcoming of the medical college. In the absence of staff quarters, doctors have to come from distant locations. As per the plans, twenty quarters will be constructed in the first phase. The newly designed pay ward will have 140 beds. There are also plans to construct a water treatment plant,” Mohan said.

A de-addiction centre was opened at the CMC the other day. The de-addiction centre started with the financial assistance from the excise department will handle the acute cases. “We have started a dialysis centre with five units. Neurology department which was started earlier has become operational now,” Mohan Sam said.

Earlier, super-speciality operation theatres in urology, neuro surgery and plastic surgery had been opened in the CMC. Many devices like arterial blood gas monitor had been added to the hospital.

As it forays into healthcare and jewellery segments, Manappuram Group wants to differentiate itself in as an affordable hospital chain as it wants to have its presence in the multi-specialty, dental care and medical diagnostics segments.

The company will soon open its first multi-specialty hospital in Kochi. “We want to differentiate ourselves from top hospital chains by positioning ourselves in the affordable segment. Most of the large chains cater to the upper middle class, but we will target the middle class as well as the poorer segment,” said VP Nandakumar, chairman of Manappuram Group.

“With minimal invasive surgeries, hospital costs can be brought down drastically. Even in some of the cardiac surgeries, it is possible for the patient to get the surgery done and leave in one day. If he is allowed to recuperate at home, hospital expenses can be brought down by 25 per cent. We are thinking on similar ways to make healthcare affordable to the masses without compromising on quality,” he said. Manappuram Health Care, branded as MAcare, will invest around Rs 1,500 crore in five years on multi-specialty hospitals, dental centres and diagnostic centres. This will be funded partly by equity from the promoters and partly by debt.

In the jewellery segment, the group plans to open 15 more stores this financial year. Till now it has invested Rs 300 crore on 15 stores in all four southern states. For the new stores, Manappuram will invest Rs 200 crore more. For this, the company would explore private equity funding as well.

“The 15 stores will strengthen Manappuram’s presence in existing markets. In the jewellery segment too, we would be a mass market brand, selling predominantly gold jewellery, without focusing much on diamond or platinum,” he said. Manappuram Jewelery will be competing with traditional jewelers in each locality, educating and upgrading customers to hallmarked gold.

At present, most large jewellery chains, except for Tata’s Gold Plus, are positioned in the premium jewellery segment. The premium segment also focuses on branded jewellery, diamonds and platimum.
