A thread about Ethiopia is now certainly justified since they're building the first intercity motorway in the country!

It will run from Addis Ababa to Nazareth, for a distance of 80 kilometers. It will feature 2x3 lanes, cost $ 612 million and is build by the Chinese. It will open 6 months ahead of schedule, which was April 20th, 2012.

Ethiopia has some very beautiful roads at northern highlands. Most of these were built by Italian engineers during Italian occupation and some steep mountain stretches are really spectacular feats of engineering. Many parts of north-western main road is still gravel and mountain roads look the same like these were built some 70-80 years ago. Eastern road from Axum to Addis Abeba is renovated with hard surface. And main roads to east and south fro Addis Abeba are pretty good for some 10 years already comparing with most of roads on northern highlands.

1 per 1000 inhabitants. But this is unsourced and many of that list come from nationmaster, which itself is far from reliable. Besides that, there may not even be something like a motor vehicle registration agency, which means the number of vehicles can only be estimated.

Main road between Gondar and Axum through Simien Mounatins. It's one of the most beautiful roads in Ethiopia. Sadly I don't have many good pictures showing the road itself.

Bus station in Debark north of Gondar. Picture was made some 5 years ago and from google maps it seems that now they have asphalt road from Gondar to Debark already.

From recent news I found that first deadline was set on 20.04 2014 but it maybe ready 6 month earlier. The first part from Addis Abeba to Debre Zeyit would be ready May 2012 already. http://addisfortune.com/Addis%20Abeb...20Schedule.htm
Seems to be real toll motorway with controlled access and so on.
It's much needed on this road but it would be interesting to know how big the tolls would be. Even 1 or 2 dollars for this road would be quite expensive for most of Ethiopians. And I'm pretty sure that most of public transport and trucks from Djibouti would still use the old road through towns instead of toll road.

I understand this is the first motorway for Ethiopia, but are there any other stretches of tolled road (tunnels, bridges etc)?

Well, there is a partial ring road around Addis Abeba that looks like a motorway sometimes, but there are a few places with roundabouts. It has 4x2 lanes at times (separating slow from fast traffic).

A feasibility study to construct a parallel toll road between Modjo and Hawassa is being conducted by the Ethiopian Roads Authority. The study, undertaken by experts from the Ethiopian authority will support a detailed design for the new express way.

This expressway would connect to the Addis Ababa - Nazret Expressway (see post above). There are also plans to extend that expressway east to Awash (towards Djibouti).

Very nice update chris :cheers What they are doing is cleanup the land first then build the bridges and culvets then put the asphalt on it .so in a matter of two years this expressway will be open for traffic.

Looking very nice, hopefully it will see a fair amount of use when it's finished!

Seems that the construction of Mojo-Hawassa motorway have also started near Mojo. You can see the cleared path just south from current road.

It's a main road from Addis Abeba to Western Amhara, Bahr Dar (capital of Amhara Region) and onto Sudan.
