Old style sign showing the name of settlement and distance from/to Addis Abeba. Usually there is only one sign like this for every town or bigger village and it's usually located close to the center of settlement not at the beginning or at the end of it.

Road between Dejen and Debre Markos was the first part of this road to get asphalt. The old cover really needs the renovation and they have finally started to renovate it.

To the right there is a direct road to Bahr Dar going through Motta. It's still the gravel road but it's about 60 km shorter. They have started to upgrade it with hard cover.

Some streets of Bahr Dar. It's the capital of Amhara region and growing very fast like all the towns in Ethiopia. These pictures are from new parts of Bahr Dar. Sadly I don't have any from the older center.

To the right there is road to Debre Tabor and Weldiya on the Addis Abeba-Adigrat road. It's the main west-east road through Amhara region.

Never. Even not at the recently renovated roads. At least there are now some signs giving directions at main crossroads. These were very rare at the Northern Ethiopia some 6 years ago.

Few pictures of streets of Gondar. These are not the best examples but are showing some examples of colonial architecture from the times of Italian occupation.

Road 3 between Gondar and Shire (Indaselassie)
Road 3 goes all the way from Gondar to Eritrean border but this part of the road is important only for the traffic between Western Amhara and Western Tigray. All the traffic between Addis Abeba and Tigray region is using eastern road through Dessie and Mekele. Due to difficult terrain it's the last part of road 3 to be renovated. The renovations started about 3-4 years ago from Gondar and Shire and will take many more years to be completed.

kaart3 by vatse, on Flickr

The first part of road between Gondar and Debark was completed last year (parts of it maybe about 2 years ago). You can see that road markings are still not completed.

The renovated part ends some km before Debark but it should be completed soon until Debark.

On the way to north Debark is a last town on the road for many hours to come.

After Debark it's a typical Ethiopian road. Most of the roads of regional importance are gravel roads like this. And 10 years ago almost all the roads looked like this.

image hosted on flickr

Picture 280 by vatse, on Flickr

image hosted on flickr

Picture 281 by vatse, on Flickr

This part of the road would be the last part to be renovated due to very difficult terrain. Just around the corner there is drop of some 1000 m down from Ethiopian Highlands.
image hosted on flickr

Picture 282 by vatse, on Flickr

The road was built during Italian occupation to connect Asmara with Gondar. And this part of the road looks almost the same as it was built more than 70 years ago.

Many parts of the road were cut to the mountain side. The road was covered with ~20-30 cm thick section of cut stones to make it stand rains. Not sure if they covered these stones with gravel already during the construction or was it added later to make the driving smoother. Steep sections were bordered with small stone walls. Many of these are destroyed by falling rocks or unfortunate drivers.
