Parts of it on easier terrain are ready for next cover.

Addi Arkay is a popular stop for lunch as it's situated almost at the middle of the way between Gondar and Dessie. It's also the biggest town of this part of the road.

Ethiopia to Build another Highway to Djibouti

Ethiopia is to build a 250 kilometer highway connecting between Dire Dawa and Dewale it was announced. The road project, currently in the design stage is expected to upgrade the current gravel road to asphalt creating another alternative access to a sea port.

The road is particularly important in light of the fact the Ethiopia handles 98 percent of its export and import freight through Port Djibouti. It is also expected that a new port intended to be constructed in Tadjoura will increase the congestion at this port thus facilitating the trade though Djibouti. Ethiopia has been investing in the construction of roads connecting with other countries in the region including the recently completed Assosa-Kurmuk concrete asphalt road and the Shire-Adi Goshu- Lugdi road project. The first phase of the Shire-Adi Goshu-Lugdi project has already been finished at an estimated cost of 616 million birr, while the second phase leading to Lugdi is currently under construction.

The Gambella-Etang-Gikawe road is expected to connect the newly-independent republic of South Sudan to Ethiopia and is slated for completion in June 2013. There are several other roads currently in the planning phase including the road network expected to ultimately connect Ethiopia with Port Mombassa.

Road 3 continues from Shire to Adwa and onto Eritrean border. As the border is closed for many years it's only important as a main road connecting towns of Northern Tigray with Adigrat and Mek'ele. Road was renovated some years ago and now it's possible to drive on asphalt all the way from Shire to Addis Abeba through Mek'ele and Dessie.

Road from Bahar Dar-Gondar road to Weldiya

It's the main road connecting Western- (Bahar Dar, Gondar) and Eastern-Amhara (Dessie, Kombolcha). Road was built by Chinese at 1970s as a good gravel road. It was renovated some years ago. Renovation ended about 3 years ago and now it's fully covered with asphalt.

Most of the road is running on plateau with highest point at about 3500 m. On the map of terrain it's easy to see that it's the rare place at this part of Ethiopia where you can avoid deep canyons and use mostly high plateaus to build the road.

Road 1 between Woldiya and Kombolcha
This is part of the main road connecting Addis Abeba with Eastern Amhara and Tigray Region. It continues to Eritrean border and have been the main road between Ethiopian and Eritrean capitals. Most of the road for motor traffic was built during Italian occupation to connect old and new parts of Italian East Africa. It was also one of the first roads to get asphalt. Some parts like road between Dessie and Kombolcha got asphalt probably during 1980s already. The last renovation of the road ended about 6-8 years ago.
