When you have Washington Post article talking how undercover and uniformed officers will descend on the Taste of Chicago amid fear of violence, you know things are bad. Expect the attendance for the event to be lower than previous years.

Lower attendance is a good thing because the Taste has gotten way too big and out of countrol. No ones goes to it anymore except for the thugs/animals, surbanites and tourists who don't know any better. I also thought charging a small entry fee ($5-10) would keep most of the trouble makers away but the people who run the damn thing are too stupid to realize that.

As for the flash mob thing, it's not only happening here in Chicago. It's happening in D.C, Philly and a few other cities around the country as well and I think and hope it'll phase out just like that slap attack thing phazed out.

Btw, D.C has its own problems to worry about. My cousin who lives there just told me about 4 or 5 people getting shot (one dead) during a parade just a few streets frow Howard, where he goes to school.

Amen. That event caused nothing but trouble and cost the city millions every year.

The high temp was 90 degrees on May 30th when the police closed North Ave Beach because of heat. Funny, they didn't close Oak St, Montrose, or an of the other beaches in Chicago.

Let's see if they close the beaches tomorrow when it will be near 100 degrees and with a heat index of near 110 degrees....

Already, this new administration is being deceitful....

Quite true, its a national story.

These are of course completly outrageous & deplorable crimes. The culprits must be caught & punished.

But consider: say a dozen years back in the booming 90s: a lot of those who've become criminals today probably at least had a minumum wage job. Now they've nothing.

Aside from a few cellphones & laptops you didn't have that many folks walking around flaunting all these expensive tech gadgets.

Good points. But I think we can all agree that anyone who waltzes around with an iPad or an iPod in plain sight is just asking for it, even if you are in Midtown Manhattan, the Loop of Chicago, or the Magnificent Mile. It's just common sense - but apparently many people don't have it.

We went through a much smaller version of this in University City Delmar Loop a few months ago, though the flash mob aspect of it didn't come up. Now though I have to wonder, because the description of the incidents was EXACTLY the same.

And with a similar thing happening in London and elsewhere in the U.K., I echo the comment that the economic piece of this can't be ignored.

Seems like the mob violence thing has died down in Chicago for now. I heard a lot of news reports this spring and early summer about it, but nothing bad happened at Taste and the story seems to have gone away?

It has but, there is still some minor issue along the N. Michigan Avenue shopping district. There was a sizable brawl at Water Tower Place about 2 weeks ago and this past Saturday night the police broke up a fight on Chicago Avenue and State St. near McDonalds. There was a large group of teens gathering at that site and a fight broke out.

That's because it was a news driven "if it bleeds it leads" style mass hysteria like shark attacks or this, at it's heart. Perfect to scare and horrify the type of middle-class and upper-class urbanite who still bothers to read the news.
Mob attacks happen all the time in Chicago, they're not higher than any other year. The only difference was that if was a slow news day and similar crimes happened around the same time in places like philly and milwaukee. Even in the original stories they mention that similar crimes had occurred on the mag mile earlier this year and last year. They've always happened.

Although most mob style attacks occur in the poverty drenched neighborhoods that their residents live in. Like when that HS kid was killed when a classmate dropped a railroad tie on his head. They're usually classified as "gang attacks".
