Good to see some more development in Yeouido! I just hope they can do something to make the streetscape more pedestrian-friendly, too.

The old tax authority building at Sejongno street in downtown seoul will be destroyed (between City Hall and Gwanghwamun square). instead, there will be a small green area and making the church behind it more visible.

The building should be gone by this July/August.

The Dutch architecture firm MVRDV won the contest for designing the Seoul Skywalk next to Seoul Station (like the Highline Park in New York).

As posted few months ago, Seoul Government wants to turn this old elevated highway into a park for pedestrians.
254 different species of flowers and trees will be planted and the project is supposed to generate a value of 1.8 times of its development costs.

This October the overpass will be closed for traffic and the park is expected to be completed by 2017.

Yet there are still some challenges to face:

Quote:
Most importantly, more public consultation has to be done. Banners in Namdaemun market show that a group is against the project. This group consists mainly of Namdaemun markt shop owners and motorbicycle couriers. They use the overpass a dozen times per day to connect shops in Namdaemun or the rest of Seoul with the manufacturers in the western part of Seoul Station.
full article and more details: http://kojects.com/2015/05/18/design...tion-overpass/

There is also a pdf for download where you can see more details about the project and all the other designs that entered the contest.

I understand the controversy, and there definitely should've been more public consultation in the process, but I don't know why the skywalk necessarily prohibits the construction of the Seoul Station development that would've gone over the tracks leaving the north of the station, which would give these businesspeople another means of travel to the other side of the station.

In truth, considering how dangerously these moped couriers drive, and how often they drive illegally on every sidewalk in the city, I'm really not sympathetic to any of their complaints.

The conversion is a good idea but it looks like it could be done a lot better. Soil should be laid down on the overpass but it looks like it's still grey concrete just with some trees around.

Yeah, definitely too much concrete and thus artificial looking. Very interesting project nonetheless. Obviously it's connecting buildings as well! Quite spectacular and some sort of novelty compared to other highline parks.

This looks great. I say keep the concrete and use lots of planters. Soil and grass on pathways can get unruly real fast.

As great an idea as this "Seoul Skywalk" proposal is, what if the flyover above Seoul station were demolished/removed instead? I know one downside: Cars and pedestrians not being able to get from the west side of the Seoul station to the east side, and vice versa.
