This would be wonderful...

Seoul mulls running subway 24/7

Seoul City is studying the feasibility of running the subway around the clock.

According to reports, Seoul Metro, which operates subway lines 1-8, is now recruiting experts to conduct the study. It will measure demand for subway services late at night and the cost. The study will be finalized by the end of the year and the company will make its decision early next year.

Seoul's subway lines normally stop operating around 1 a.m. and are back in service from about 5 a.m.

The building (as well as the adjacent Technomart) is getting older, and there is now a new project to build to 30-floor twin towers there to redevelop the area. The floor space of these two towers would be 1.5 that of the 246-meter 63 building in Yeouido. So that would be quite a big complex !

No renders yet. The target date is early 2020

SMG has an agreement in place with Hanjin Heavy Industries (which owns the land where East Seoul Terminal is located) for the redevelopment of the terminal.

The new complex would feature 2 towers of 32 floors (130 meters).

Construction would start in 2019.

Jongro Central Bus Lane

This project has been talked about for years and years, and it's finally starting. Central bus lanes will be installed on Jongro (between Gwanghwamun and Heunginjimun). Jongro is Seoul's main historical West-East avenue, and this new road will complete the network of central bus lanes. It will be very important for the network, as many BRT lanes went all the way to Jongro from the East or West, but without actually going through Jongro. Here is a picture of the network, which is slightly updated but gives a decent idea of that big gap in Central Seoul.

The 1.2km section west of Gwangwhamun (up to Seodaemun Station) was already completed this April

There are many things to note:
- The number of lanes will be reduced from 8 to 6 (with 2 dedicated to buses, so only 4 remaining for cars)
- The sidewalks will be widened, and obstacles (such as air ventilation units) removed, which will improve pedestrian flow and working environments for merchants on the side of the street
- The speed of the buses on the entire 2.8 km sections will increase from 13.5 to 17.7kph.
- Conversely, the average speed on the other lanes will probably drop from 17.7 to 13.4kph.
- New and more convenient pedestrian crossings to be added
- The bus station platforms will be removable / foldable (a world first). This is because the road hosts various events and festivals, such as the parade on Buddha's Birthday, which necessitate the whole width of the road.

Construction will begin in September and be completed before the end of the year.

Extended Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway unveiled to public

Some 100 meters of walkway by the famous stonewall surrounding the palace Deoksugung in Seoul has been restored and was opened to public Wednesday.

The section is part of the 170 meters of the 1.1-kilometer wall that has been occupied by the British Embassy for nearly 60 years. Some 70 meters of the walkway, which is the embassy’s legal property, will remain off-limits to pedestrians.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon made the first approach to the UK authority for cooperation in restoring and returning to the public South Korea’s historic Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway in October 2014. The following May, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding and have since been working together for the restoration.

Deoksugung’s picturesque stonewall walkway is a magnet for both local and foreign tourists, most popular during the fall foliage season. It is among the 100 most beautiful roads in Korea, as chosen by the central government, and has been designated as a must-visit by Seoul government.

The state-run Cultural Heritage Administration said Wednesday that it will include the recovered part of wall in a city-run historic walking tour program slated for year’s end.

Mayor Park, attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony, said he would continue efforts to restore the remaining 70-meter section of the stone wall. The event was also attended by British Ambassador to Korea Charles Hay.

Meaning “Palace of Virtuous Longevity,” Deoksugung is one of Seoul’s five grand palaces built during the Joseon era (1392-1910).

three days ago i passing by this way and see some u/c.
at that time i just wondering what they did in there? cause i thought that area closed road.
but second thought with this news i realized that u/c is for this project.

My favorite walking area in seoul.
if you walk in there you can feel some energy from land. feel some comfortable and relaxing.
that is reason why ancient king choose this place for palace.

hopefully UK co operation with SEOUL and completed remaining closed road to open public and recovery old heritage too

BTW no offensive mean but Right red color wall(uk) look ugly.

Opening of Doneuimun Museum Village

The traditional village, which mixes buildings from different eras (Joseon, Colonial era, post Korean War...) opened on Saturday.

http://www.yonhapnews.co.kr/photos/1...13&input=1196m

http://www.kookje.co.kr/news2011/asp...02.99099000228

I visited the place, which holds the Architecture Biennale on Saturday. I didn't really like the biennale projects, which were way to artsy-pantsy for my own taste. The Doneuimun Village itself is quite nice. I remain curious as to how it will be used after the Biennale ends. Probably some cafes, exhibitions or other events. It has potential, but since the project has little PR (unlike Seoullo 7017) and is not really visible, it will probably remain out of sight for many people.

I think that this project is a bit isolated from remains of Gyeonghuigung, but if Gyeonghuigung gets rebuilt, it could attract many tourists. Gyeonghuigung is the only of the 5 palaces which has been almost completely demolished. All the other ones had had key structures left as well as their wall intact. They've only rebuilt the very center of the palace, but around it is a mix of buildings that were built in the reconstruction era and that don't make any sense at this location: Gyeonghuigung Seoul City Fine Arts Museum (just got demolished), Gyeonghuigung Bunker (yes, I said bunker, there's an actual bunker like 20 meters away from the built-up section of the palace. The city has said it would buy the lot and demolish it by 2020), Seoul History Museum, Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Seoul Meteorological Measurement Office...

Opening of Oil Tank Cultural Park

I was very hopeful about this one, and I was not disappointed (I went there on Saturday as well, but I think it opened the day before). I mean they are still oil tanks, and access is not convenient, but it provides something very unique and quite eerie. The location is great because if you look up towards the tank you have the mountain they dig in right behind, and the Sangam Kaizer Palace Classic towers a little bit further back. If you look the other way, there is a nice view of the World Cup Stadium and even Yeouido a bit farther away.

http://news.mt.co.kr/mtview.php?no=2...arch.naver.com

http://www.yonhapnews.co.kr/photos/1...13&input=1196m

There are 6 tanks. The main one hosts a cafe, and room inside on about three floors for exhibitions and such. Basically, it looks like what would happen if Sebitseom (Banpo Floating Islands) f*cked Dongdaemun Design Plaza while listening to grunge music. There's a smaller one with a domed-tank, which looks nice. Another one for open air concerts (2nd floor) and a conference room inside on the 1st floor. One remains unchanged and close to the public for conservation reasons. One is completely hollow and dark but people can actually visit it (will probably be used for cultural events later), and one hosts a small museum about the location (Mapo Oil Depot, which was decommissioned for safety reasons before the 2002 World Cup). Also, a couple of bunker-like buildings which I didn't visit, and a central plaza. The plaza is very wide, but was depressingly empty when I went there. I guess they plan on using it as a art expo / concert / food truck / flee market venue. Overall, a very interesting place. It wasn't very crowded on day one, but I think that a big event could help the place gain some momentum.

So overall, plenty of urban regeneration this week, with the Deoksugung Stonewall Alley restoration and the opening of the Ui LRT.

I'm still undecided as to which project is the tackiest. All Big Ten builders bid on this project (except Samsung C&T). They look orders of magnitude better than Banpo Lot 1 (Sublots 1,2 and 4, as Sublot 3 is a different project for which the reconstruction project is one or two years late compared to this one), but still a disappointment, as I don't think it will look too good 20 years from now. Well we'll see. I usually like GS E&C over Hyundai E&C, but I would probably lean Hyundai on this one. But now I root for Daelim Industrial for most projects (e-Convenient World, ACRO).

Interestinglym they managed to get project names even tackier than their plans.

GS E&C: Xi Presidence (an ugly mix of President, Residence and Confidence)

Hyundai E&C: Banpo The H Class+est (yes, it's actually Class+est and not Classiest, I'm not making this up)

The results will be in September 28th. What do you think?
