TOI Article

Quote:
TCS gives design contract for Rajarhat SEZ

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has awarded the Rs 970-crore contract for design and construction of special economic zone at Rajarhat to a consortium of L&T Construction and Shapoorji Pallonji. The SEZ, being developed by TCS, is spread over 40-acres in Rajarhat Action Area III. The SEZ notification, though, was made way back in May, 2008.

Built with the plan to employ 16,000 by TCS, the project is slated to be completed in two phases. The first phase is scheduled to be over by February 15, 2014, which will have the capacity to accommodate 7,000 workstations. The remaining 9,000 will be accommodated with the completion of the project at the end of 32 months from now.

"Immediate mobilization of the project has started and the site office is being constructed," a source said.

TOI has learnt that the concept design for the project has been provided by the TCS to L&T Construction and Shapoorji Pallonji, based on which the final design is being chalked out. "It is a design-built project, where it will be developed by the two firms and in completion, the project will be handed over to TCS," the source said.

An L&T Construction spokesperson told TOI: "We are very positive about the project and hope it would end within the scheduled time frame."

Earlier, L&T Construction and Shapoorji Pallonji had executed many TCS projects together. L&T Construction is known for its engineering skills, whereas Shapoorji for its designing acumen.

When contacted a TCS official said: "The company is doing its job." Though, he declined to elaborate further on the project details.

TCS, engaged in IT services, business solutions and outsourcing, already has four units operating in Salt Lake Sector V, the IT hub of the city. It has also taken a space in Unitech SEZ in Rajarhat. This project will be its sixth initiative in the state. It already employs around 12,000 in the city.

Business-Standard

Quote:
TCS plans to double its headcount in Kolkata in next 2 years
Will spend Rs 1,350 crore to set up 16,500-seat campus in Rajarhat

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the largest software exporter in the country, today said it plans to double its headcount in Kolkata over the next two to three years. The software firm will spend Rs 1,350 crore to set up a new campus in Rajarhat, Kolkata that will create additional 16,500 jobs.

"Our growing presence in Kolkata continues to be of strategic importance for our overall business growth. We have around 18,000 employees in our offices in Kolkata. By end of financial year 2014-15, we expect to have around 35,000 employees here," S Mahalingam, chief financial officer and executive director at TCS, told reporters here today.

The new campus, spread over 40 acres of land, will be built in two phases. The first phase is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2014 and the second phase by the fourth quarter of the year.

In the first phase, 7,000 seats will be ready while the remaining 9,500 seats will be completed during the second phase.

Tata Realty and Infrastructure has been given the responsibility for overall development of the project. Tata Consulting Engineers is the project management partner while a joint venture of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Shapoorji Pallonji & Co will execute the project.

The new campus in Kolkata is also classified as IT SEZ (information technology special economic zone). TCS currently has five IT SEZs across India and is building three more including the new campus in Kolkata.

TCS SEZ to be operational by March next year

Kolkata: Five years after getting formal approval, the proposed special economic zone (SEZ) of IT giant TCS will finally be operational at Rajarhat by the end of this fiscal. This is the first SEZ to be functional under the Mamata Banerjee government which had refused to recommend the Infosys project at Rajarhat for a similar status.
An SEZ has four stages — approval in-principle, formal approval, notification and finally, beginning of operations.
It was in May, 2008 that TCS received the formal approval which was followed by notification last year.
In Bengal there are a total of nine notified SEZs out of which six are operational as on August this year. If all goes well, the IT giant will be the seventh operational SEZ in the state.
The other operational SEZs in Bengal include the Wipro facility in Sector V, Falta SEZ, Manikanchan SEZ, Unitech SEZ at Rajarhat, Bantala SEZ and DLF SEZ in Rajarhat.
“The first phase of the standalone SEZ of TCS in Rajarhat will be operational by March, 2013. The work is progressing fast,” Sanjeev Nandwani, zonal development commissioner, SEZ (east and northeast), Union ministry of commerce and industry, said on the sidelines of the National IT Conclave 2013, organized by the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Kolkata.
Earlier, TCS officials had stated that the project would be completed in two phases. The first phase will have the capacity to accommodate 7,000 workstations and the remaining 9,000 will be accommodated with the completion of the project. TCS has planned to invest Rs 1,350 crore for the project which will come up on a 40-acre land.
According to company officials, the IT giant is looking at recruiting around 16,500 people for this project at Rajarhat. TCS had earlier said that it intends to take its headcount in Bengal from 18,000 to 35,000 in two to three years. TCS caters to various verticals that include utilities, retail, energy and banking & financial services.
The situation in terms of IT projects in Bengal is looking up and showing good signs for SEZ and land allotment is not an issue, Nandwani said.
He also said that the Centre is now focusing on promoting SEZs in tier-II and tier-III cities. The government is in the process of notifying an SEZ in Manipur. “A formal approval has already been given by the Manipur government and the land will be in the heart of Imphal,” Nandwani added.

Going by the March updates, can the construction be completed by this year end? It will indeed be a feat then.
