Friends I think Central Mall Kolkata on AJC bose road is under construction.Yesterday I saw similar structure as picture pasted above opposite to La Marts school.Structure is very much visible if you pass through AJC Bose road flyover.

Magic Friday is finally here.But not before a fierce bout between Harry Potter and muscle-plexing muggles that threatened to fell the beloved enchanter before his last date with the city.
After an anxious morning and nailbiting afternoon when weekend plans to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 seemed to be fading as fast as a bad Patronus charm,a spell from some invisible,all-powerful wand set everything right for thousands of the boy wizards fans.Around 4pm,the stalemate between distributor Warner Bros Pictures and multiplex exhibitors over revenue-sharing terms ended,with both parties succumbing to pressure from cinegoers who had grown agitated with the hour.By 5pm,advance booking counters had opened at plexes across the city.By 6pm,the news had spread like wildfire,triggering a rush of online bookings and a scramble to the plexes for tickets.Nothing could stop this Pottermania,not even the transport strike.
This is sheer magic.Harry Potter must have waved his magic wand to make the movie happen for us, Subho Mukherjee,a class IV student of St James School,squealed in delight as his parents managed to book tickets for him and his friends to a Friday evening show.Priyanshi Durbha,an M Sc student at Presidency University,said she was so depressed by the deadlock over the films release that she had seen herself taking on multiplex guards with a wand in her dream.I woke up shouting expelliarmus.There was so much anticipation.Im happy I can catch my first day,first show, she said.

Sanjiv Goenka all set to make luxury retail debut

After carving out his share of his father’s business empire, Sanjiv Goenka, the younger son of Rama Prasad Goenka, is set to debut into real estate, with a mall selling “luxury brands” such as Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), Canali, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci and Zegna.

CESC Properties, a subsidiary of the group’s power utility, CESC Ltd, is building the city’s first luxury mall, Spencer’s Galleria. It will house 20 luxury brands, a first for Kolkata.

The mall will be ready by the second half of 2012 and is to be spread over three acres in central Kolkata, with a retail area of 400,000 sq ft.

Sanjiv Goenka, now chairman of what is called the RP-Sanjiv Goenka group, says he guarantees the mall, designed by British architectural firm RTKL and constructed by Larsen & Toubro, would be a destination for people beyond Kolkata. There are, after all, just three luxury malls in India.

“We are speaking to 25-30 brands as of now, and we will secure 20 of them. We will finalise the brands in six months. Four to five have been signed on, which includes Canali and Gucci,” an official close to the development said.

“There are a lot of high net worth individuals and Marwari families in Kolkata. Also, a growing upper middle class, which is buying luxury cars and owns these products that we are going to bring in now,” said Pankaj Renjhen, joint managing director-retail services, who is handling the mall.

We can now say that Kolkata is finally seeing a mushrooming of malls.

Not yet....hardly we have 5-6 malls...and these could max bring it to 15...including the R'haat ones!!

True. Plus all the malls are concentrated in south and east Kolkata. There is no new mall in central, north Kolkata (Barnaparichay may be the one exception). Also the entire Behala stretch does not have any mall.

It depends on what we are comparing against..and I am not equating Kolkata with blr/Mum/NCR or even Hyd for that matter. We have more than 5-6 now ( CC 1&2, Axis, SC, Forum 1& 2, Homeland, Mani Square and some smaller malls linked to large housing complexes such as Sherwood Estate, Hiland park etc) We will probably have atleast 15 operational malls in the next 1.5-3 years or so which is good!.

Statesman house was supposed to be converted to a mall, do not know the current status. Also if you consider the north end of BC road as Central Kolkata, then Kolkata Central is coming up there. I would not be too concerned about North Kolkata since (in future) they can access malls such as Central , Galleria & Lake Mall owing to existing metro connectivity. Also I think there is some mall coming up on BT road.

Behala is clearly a concern, where a large middle/upper middle class do not have a mall in the nearby vicinity. Even though costs are low here and land may be available, developers are probably wary of constructing one here owing to the current traffic mess and accessibility. Hopefully the metro may lead to one or two malls here in the future.

Its been bought by Spencers...Spencers hypermart will open there!!
