Liverpool Club Scene

As I draw near the fireside with a cup of cocoa tonight, I can tell you that my clubbing days have come to an end. Yes nearly the big 40, the days when I could do a turn on the floor are over. Nevertheless, I thought there might be interest out there for a thread dedicated to nightclubs in Liverpool past and present, from punk to pop. The Grafton to the Gbar. Memories, experiences and photos would be great, as would a debate on the contemporary club scene, what it offers and what it needs and how does it compare to other cities.

To start here is one from my mis spent youth.

Cool, a couple of people I know are off to Glastonbury, I hope you don't mind me saying but I guess that would be your thing. Festivals were not really my scene really although some of the raves I went to years ago were outdoor.

I am really into underground house clubs - by underground I mean the style of music. Garlands, G-Bar, Society, Nation and Circo specifically.

I think dance music is too mainstream now to be underground. It had its day but mutated into pop. Samantha Cameron in a club in Ibiza says it all.

I know what you mean I would love to smack David Guetta actually for working with all these R&B artists.

Gangs, rape, robbery and prostitution?! Maybe at the start of last decade this was true, but certainly not now. There were around 200 recorded muggings in 2000, none in 2010. It shows you how much of an effort they've made on sorting out that problem. The only real problem there is drugs, which doesn't affect people who don't get involved. As for the commercial thing, I think they've made a good attempt at keeping the companies low key; the only major company I can think is orange, and they're not even allowed their name or logos outside their tent. Personal experience I suppose

I don't agree that drugs are a problem, they should be legalised. It would be great to see cannabis cafes in town. Anyway Liverpool needs some good clubs playing hip hop imo.

Imagine cannabis cafes in Concert Square, I bet there would be a lot less trouble. Ropewalks would be ideal for such premises.

I'd say Drum & Bass is pretty underground, with a couple of artists like Pendulum being exceptions, the likes of Trance are mainstream though. Dance covers such a broad area of music that there's bound to be mainstream and underground bits all over. Are there any clubs dedicated to Drum & Bass in Liverpool by the way?

Agreed, tbh I'm not exactly up to date with much of the cutting edge in dance music these days. House music as it was known in the late 80's was a radical movement, until the big clubs like Cream went mainstream.
