Yes, one journalist asks Turkey to intervene but of course they will not. They didn't allow Allied forces to invade Iraq from the north through Turkish territory, they're hardly going to attack Syria.

No-one will interfere with Syria, no-one really cares sad to say, but it's the truth. The situation in Syria will be sorted out by the Syrians themselves.

Perhaps a sad truth. I hope then that the majority find justice.

Was interesting seeing Assad rant during his speech earlier in the week, he accused the arab members of the Arab League of not being 'arab enough' and looking to punish Syria while praising the non arab members for siding with him, he said they had lost their way and wernt following arabic principles handed down from the Ottoman empire anymore and that the true bastion of Arabicness was now Syria even though they were not ethnically arab. He also repeated his accusation of an Al Qaeda plot to destablise his country and that the attacks on civilians were made by hard line islamists and terrorists. He vowed not to resign while a single person in the country supported him.

Meanwhile the Arab League has suspended sending anymore observers since an attack injured eleven of them, the Arab League had said the Syrian government was partially complying by removing miltary units but was still using snipers to attack civilian protesters. Theres 165 observers in the country with one having walked out in disgust and another said to be close to doing so, Qatars leader has said the mission is a failure.

A french journalist was killed and a dutch journalist injured during the daily violence alongside 8 others while pro government supporters on a day which left 24 dead across Syria, the death toll since last March is now over 5,000 while Syria contends 2,000 security forces members have died (this could be true, made up or refer to the military units which defected). The journalist and 14 others was escorted by regime police and soldiers on a government arranged trip but shortly after the interview in a pro-government area a grenade was thrown and they retreated into a nearby building to take cover, that building was then pelted by grenades.

4 observers left Syria now and the whole mission is in doubt, the Arab members of the Arab League want to hand over responsibility for the problem to the UN.

Iran has begun shipping military equipment to Syria to prop up the Government. Guess their hoping to have one ally if the Syrian President survives.

The United States closed its embassy in Syria and pulled out remaining staff Monday after the Syrian government refused to address its security concerns, senior State Department officials told CNN.

Given the reprehensible positions of Russia and China on Syria is there anything meaningful that external powers can do about the shameless murder occurring?

Yes use NATO as the 'new UN' to get things done in the world.

It's a complete shambles that the UN which was setup on the principles to prevent war, civil war and human suffering have failed in their duty to do something about this.

Russia and China's veto are completely unacceptable to the majority of world opinion who agreed this resolution.
