Diesel light rails are not good in such a warm world. Electric vehicles are the only solution.

And when funding isn't an issue, then this solution will be implemented.

It has been delaying for the past 10 years actually, when both the Salvador and the Fortaleza metros started construction in 1998, they were expected to be operational by 2002.
![]() . As of now, only the Fortaleza metro seems to be "on tracks" to open in about a year, with trial operations carrying non-paying passengers to start this year already. The Salvador metro is still lacking a defined schedule. I'd say 2013 maybe a likely time to expect it to open. Why, what is the problem with diesels in warm climate?

Salvador have very serious administrative problems, and this is causing the long delays for the beginning of the operation. |

East Line expropriations seem to start to materialize. The East line will be completely underground. Quote:

Light Rail system ("VLT") approved for Cuiabá, capital and largest city of Mato Grosso state (Midwest) to open for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. 32 stations are planned, cost estimated R$ 1,1 billion (US$ 800 million).

I'll keep this thread updated as I find more of course. June 27 update: videos

Hello, I think there should be some corrections.
1) Belem’s heritage tram has later converted to diesel tram. Due to unsightyness, bow collectors & overhead wires were removed, and electric tram has now converted to diesel. 2) After viewing the map, I think Santos’ heritage tram is one of the largest heritage tram of the world. Although smaller than its original network (closed in 70s), but current system is not so small. 3) You haven’t written about Itatinga’s tram, which is the only transportation to its hydroelectric plant. 4) Surprisingly, some Brazilian cities are opening diesel light rails. We all know that diesel/petrol causes smoke and air pollution, which also decreases our natural resources. Electric is eco-friendly. Which is most important, cost or life? Although initial cost of an electric transport’s infrastructure is costly, but it makes longer gain, to our future generation. If Fortaleza can make electric metro, which is much costly, why can’t they start their new tram as electric system? It is no doubt that tram’s infrastructure is much lower than metro. I think opening a diesel light rail for such big city like Fortaleza, will be a great mistake. BEWARE FROM IT. Your photos of Rio’s tram are very very good & bright. |
