MISC | Control Towers

Control Towers

From air safety utility to architectural fashion icon, control towers are the tall, monumental face of airports all over the world. Here's a place to show everybody your city's control towers and their evolution through time from an open window observatory atop a 1930s airdrome to the sleek, futuristic kings of the mega-airport they are today!

Dulles Tower by Samer Farha, on Flickr

As a key part of Eero Saarinen's 1962 Dulles Terminal, this modernist icon served as the main tower for air operations into 1990s before expansions and additional towers were built.

Schiphol Amsterdam has two towers.

Schiphol tower west 60m.
With the construction of runway 5 in 2003, Schiphol suddenly noticed that the runway was located too far from the maintower.
Quickly Schiphol decided to build a new one with no authorization of the govenment. Taxiing from the 5th runway to Schiphol vice versa takes 20 minutes.

Schiphol maintower 101m

Classic control tower: Houston Hobby Airport

image hosted on flickr

ATM and Baron N881H WW 6 11 013 by MichaelB in Houston, on Flickr

Built in 1940 by Howard Hughes, this classic Art Deco gem served Houston's primary airport until 1969 when the Bush Intercontinental Airport was opened. Today it serves as the Air Terminal Museum.
